When I moved last year, I gave away my FW fish to a local store and my 90 gallon Oceanic has been sitting idle. I want to take the plunge and convert to saltwater. I have an Eheim 2128 Professional II canister filter, which contains a heating element. Does anyone know if it's possible to just remove the heating element and use the filter for SW?

I am not positive, but I think you can. My best recollection is they use two different heaters for the infilter models depending on whether its for fw or sw. You can contact Eheim via their site http://www.eheim.com/

u should be able to but why would u get rid of the heater?

The element is only designed for FW. If I could replace it with a SW element I would, but a few years ago I was at the Pet Industry Trade Show in Atlantic City and talked to the Eheim rep about doing that. He said I'd have to send the whole thing to Eheim for them to perform the surgery. That sounded much more expensive than getting a "regular" heater.

I'm having a little trouble with Eheim's Web site. When I type in my info on the contact page and press submit, it just stays on the same page with no error message or acknowledgement. I tried it in both IE and Firefox with the same result, so I don't know if they're getting my message or not.

sorry, but i cant see what the difference is between a heater that is designed for fresh water or salt?

This product is sold in the UK as use for marine tanks aswell as fresh....

ok, must be some difference in this product that is available outside the UK as UK sellers offer this for marine setups..

If that is the case, then why not just remove the heater element out of the filter unit and fill the hole left by it...there is no reason why this would not work..depending on the pressures involved, either fill with silicon ( low pressure ) or cover and glue with acrylic and use weldon to bond for higher pressures...and then just use a standard heater..
