I have a 75 g oceanic that is extremely dirty. There is some yellowish brown crap that is extremely extremely tough to get off on the aquarium (could it be calcium buildup?). Razor blade barely does anything to it. Need suggestions on cleaners, thanks

Able to post a pic?

Sounds like it could be Diatom (i.e. Brown Algea) or maybe hard water (hard to tell). Is it a build up?

A water test will help determine if it is hard water -- What is ur Alkalinity and hardness readings?

what's your pH? sounds like calcium buildup to me. you can remove them by scrubbing the deposits with vinegar.

Fill it up and let it soak with a mild bleach solution. Then elbow grease time.

SPOT-X Hard water stain/spot remover

I highly recommend Spot-X Spot and stain remover. I tried all kinds of products and they didn't work or worked somewhat but didn't remove the stains entirely. I just happened to see this product a Home Depot one day and decided to try it, it was only $6.00 for a 7 oz bottle. Spot-X took the stains right off without that much work.

Spot-X works great on water stains but it requires a little more work on your part to remove calcium buildup. I had to use a drill and buffing pad to remove some really thick calcium build up on a used SW tank I bought.

Like I said I bought mine at Home Depot in the cleaning Supplies section but you can order it on line too.http://www.spot-x.com/html/aquariums.html

its not filled with water, just an empty old tank with lots of crap build up. Will listen to some of previous suggestions tho, thanks

Take white vinegar, soak a napkin or paper towel with it, and put it on the built up area for about 30-60 minutes... the build up will be easier to scrape off.

Thank you. This thread has really helped me. I got a used 150 gal that used to be salt water and I am trying to clean it up to. I want to use it as a planted FW for my angels and blood parrots. Thanks again.
