Ok. yesterday i bought a Nimbochromis venustus for my cichlid tank. He is still a tiny littel guy at only maybe an inch and a half. But after doing some reading i foudn out these guys get 10in. long!!! oh no!

This is a 55g tank. And they say he needs at least a 125g. Id realyl like to keep him if i could cause that would clasify me as a "monster fish keeper" lol but what do you think i should do?

either start saving or return him. or both. that way you can get the tank first, and then look for that kind of fish again.

Well, how long do you think it will take him to reach that length?

When I got my oscars, all I could afford with a 55g. I'm currently looking for 125g to upgrade. So if your financial capability permits, you could do an upgrade later. Also, do some research and see how fast your fish grow, just to give yourself a time frame for planning purposes. Otherwise, you probably should bring them back to the store.

The growth rate depends on many things like water conditions, tank size, tank mate's (how many, their size) food & amount fed daily. Your tank being the size that it is will slow his growth rate dwn to begin w/ & the rest of the varibles will play their part as well. The 1 Venustus I have in the same basic setup (55gl) has grown ABOUT 1" or so per yr, he is about 5yrs. old & he's just under 6". If I were you I'd start saving for your upgrade & enjoy him as he is, maybe by the time he needs to be moved you'll have your upgrade & it will be all good. Really no reason to get ride of him now just keep an eye on him, its not like hes not going to grow 3" in the blink of an eye, very few of these type (Cich's) fish do. I think they're really cool fish, great contrast to many other's & they just get even cooler as they grow, very beautiful fish, great colors that like w/ most change as they grow.

Don't want to be rude & just point out the obvious, but buying any fish (or any animal) w/out good knowledge of that fish, not such a good idea, case in point. I'm sure you will from now on, but we have to do some good research on what we buy B4 we buy & that doesn't mean just accepting the advice of your LFS, lol:)

Just a couple of last things. Bringing up gender, never a "good" idea, lol. Believe me I hear what your saying about not knowing till your going, but this can & does cause lots of prob's at times. "Knowledge" is 1 of the easiest thing's to fake. Chk out site's like http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/, http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/african_cichlid_genus_gallery.php or something like http://www.davesfish.com/, http://www.dykemyster.com/ for quick, easy, informed way's to make that wish list/window shoppin thing wrk best 4ya. Remember real knowledge is power & livin is learnin, learnin is livin, EVERYTHING comes w/ a price & ya get what ya pay for, so its all good, if you can afford it, lol:)
