I was going to do a 20L, but decided I wanted something bigger. Did some research on the different tank sizes and what would work for me. I decided on the 36"x18"x18" 50gal. Great selection of lights, good depth for aquascaping and still small enough to fit it where I need it. Plus, the 18" cabinet gives me lots of room to keep the equipment out of site.

-Its going in a bedroom, so filtration will come from an Eheim canister. I've never used them, but I may try a Rena canister, but since using several Eheims, everything else I've tried in a canister (Fluval and Magnum) has been a disappointment noise-wise.

-After trying the Carbo Plus unit a few years ago, I'm definately going with a pressurized system. I'm in Portland, so I'll probably give Rex a ring and get a set-up from him.

-I've never used them, but the AH Supply 2x96watt kit seems a perfect fit for this size of tank. 192watts may be a bit much for my experience level with planted tanks though. Some more research is needed here.

-Substrate will be a bag of Flourite on the bottom (only because I have an extra bag in storage) and the rest Eco-Complete.

Thats it for now. Pretty much blew my extra cash today on the tank today, so the rest will come in the next month or so. Heres a shot of the tank.

Decided to try a Rena canister, so I ordered an XP3, plenty of filtration for this tank. I went to Home Depot today and got some 3/4" pine (I have a fat cat that likes to jump up on the aquariums) and built a canopy. Very basic, but for $15 I cant complain. I'm going to order 2 x single 96watt kits from AH Supply so I can get the individual power cords. Heres a shot of the canopy - still need to sand, primer and paint.

While I'm waiting for some equipment to arrive, I decided to make some changes to my canopy. First I hinged the top for easier access. I didnt want to mount the lights to the hinged top, so I took an idea that AH Supply suggested and will mount the lights to pieces of 1x4 hanging from the inside of the canopy - I may add some tracks to make it fancier. It should work very nice as I can easily move the lights for maintenance and still have some light to do it. In addition, I'll be able to put the lights anywhere I want for coverage. Heres a few shots after making the changes. The woodworking is quite fun, I'd recommend it to anyone - lots cheaper than buying.

Finally got the light kits and put them together. I also installed the substrate (combo of sand, eco complete and flourite), heater and rena xp3. Heres a few photos on how it all went and the finished product. On a side note, the Rena filter is fairly quiet, but noisy compared to my eheim professionals - I'm glad I'm not sleeping in there.

Geez - I really didnt realize how bright the lights were going to be - I shouldn't have much of a problem growing stuff in there  The AH reflectors work very, very well and the kit was fun to install. 192 watts on a 50 is quite a bit, but I'll run them both on separate timers. Now, just gotta save up for the co2 set-up. On a side note, I also decided to use the hood I made instead of the canopy - it ended up being too bulky and heavy to move frequently.

Another note - if you purchase an AH Supply kit, make sure you buy some switches as they dont come with the kit. Easily purchased locally - AH may even offer them.

I have always just used heavy duty timers. They also have an on/off switch.
