Ok I just got 2 AZOO 2500s and 2 MAXI-JET Powerhead 1200s and 2 VIA AQUA 2300 Pumps ... First of all there isn't enough room for half the things I got so I only put in 1 AZOO and 1 Maxi-jet. Just these two pumps alone are moving the water like crazy. I think I'm going to take the AZOO out and add the other Maxi-jet because the Maxi is smaller and looks better. Do I need the other 4 pumps??

How do the fish swim with such high currents??

Also I got a MIDI FLOTOR Protien Skimmer and the thing is so large. My Hood doesn't fit with it in the tank. So I took it out. On a scale of 1-10, how necessary is my protien skimmer?

Oh yeah and my water got cloudy after I put all these things in ... didn't disturb the substrat at all ... except for the current water movment from the powerheads.

the ammount of powerheads really depend on the size of your tank. i believe the VIA AQUA 2300 and the AZOO 2500 pumps put out something like 600+ GPH which is quite a bit of water movement. You generally want the water to turn about 10X the amount of gallons you have.

The protien skimmer also depends on certain things such as if your keeping corals or not. Also Skimmers really do better in a sump not as much of an eye sore either. If your planning on keeping coral a skimmer is really a good idea. If your keeping fish only then dont worry about the skimmer water changes will do just fine.

well to be honest water flow in the aquarium is really good. Without it the tank really isnt healthy. I would put the two Via Aqua pumps in and then see about returning the other 2 AZOO pumps and buying a SCWD (Switching Current Water Director). the good thing about the SCWD is that it creates a switching current in the tank and helps to eliminate any "dead spots" in the tank. You can go to this website to see more info on the SCWD

As for the fish they will be fine in the current.

thats not a bad idea via aqua pumps and maxi jets are the best out ther right now. u just dont want dead spots in ur tank how is ur rock set up? if its up against a wall u want a pump blowing back there so muck doesnt form up. as he stated as wall it depends on the corals that u plan to keep. what you really want to create are counter flows that complement each other and cause cross flows and undercurrents rather than juts bulk flow. so i would run them at opposite angels for best effects and even one blowing against the glass will cause an uplifting downward current.

Correct Thats why i recemmended the SCWD. this way he can have atleast 2powerheads create the cross motion and then the smaller Maxi's get along the back of the glass since they have less GPH than the Via Aqua's. However i forgot to say he would need a pump to run the SCWD.

the SCWD works well but can be expensive...its not needed but would work very good.

To be honest what I think you are planning to add in your tank is a bit too much flow for a 55gl tank. I have a 55gl tank. I have 1 MaxiJet 900 and a return pump from my sump that does 350gph. So total it is about 500+ gph. To me this seem enough in my tank. I have no dead spots in front of my display and about the back I believe I dont have any either or not that I can see from. But I do also have a MaxiJet 1200 in my tank as well. When I turn this on my current is pretty crazy. So I leave it off for now. And yeah it does also depend on the coral and fish you plan to put in your tank. Exo: pipefish or seahorses require really low flow as from clown fish require moderate flow maybe more.

Buying 6 powerheads is quite alot. Heh
