Daily Log of Constructing a Tropical Fish Pond

If you didn't use a pond liner, I'm not sure how else you would get it to seal. You could use epoxy on the wood, but you'd have to be pretty meticulous about filling in all the seams first. 90 bucks for a pondliner sounds like an amazing deal, I guess I should have done more research before I bought mine. I got 45mil liner from Home Depot, I think it is 12'x15' and it ran me about 200 bucks.

I am going to use a liner, I am just not sold on buying the "underliner-liner". These underliners look like coarse blankets and are another 40 bucks......

Oh yeah, on the web last night I discovered a liquid epdm liner that you paint on. So actually you are right you can paint on liners now!

Ah I understand now. I think as long as you're careful, esp since you're sanding everything down, and make sure all points face outward, you will be alright. You could even countersink the scew heads and fill them wih putty if you were really worried about it.

Last night I applied Thompson's Water Sealer on about 75% of the boards. It was hard to see how well you were covering the wood because its clear. This morning I had to get a towel and absorb all the little drops that formed from over application. So I learned that you must take your time and apply a thin layer. The sealant didn't really change the apperance of the wood so no pics. The can says that it takes about 48 hours to dry. When I get back from Easter Vacation I plan on painting the other boards. Then it is construction time!

Well it looks like the gestapo moved my thread even after I pleaded with them not to. They moved it from the most visited forum "General Freshwater" to a forum that is basically not used. It's funny, daily logs of making a tank is ok, but if that tank happens to be outside it no longer is good.

I guess if people keep reading the thread I will continue, but most likely it will just collect dust.

I hadn't seen your thread until it was moved here, so don't knock the mods too hard. That looks like a great idea though, and is turning out nicely! I'd be wary of using cardboard/newspaper as an under liner, it will get wet and rot. I know the home despots around me carry a felt-like underliner, it was around $5-$6 a sq yard when I installed my pond a few years ago.

Good points....I am still upset about the move though

I will go to home depot and see what they got. $5 a sqyd is pretty resonable.......

I would have to side with the mods on this one. This is truly a DIY tropical FW setup if there ever was one. I always check this forum for new and exciting things, and your blog certainly doesn't disappoint.

You may not get the traffic that the Gen. FW section gets, but you're getting people who are actually interested in this kind of thing.

Keep up the good work! It's looking good so far. If you really wanted to make that wood smooth, you'd go at it with some double-aught steel wool after you put the finish on. Then apply another coat.

Looking good! Nice progress. I think I would use a liner at least on the bottom in case some roots try to work up from the bottom.
