LFS sickened me today.

Stores are not going to carry $4 fish that all need to be separate, if they have to run filtered tanks for them all. They would end up costing them money.

I suspect that if the conditions were as bad as some people claim, there wouldn't be so many success stories of people buying them and keeping them for any length of time.

If we are talking bettas - It's the large mortaility that they have in the store before they are even sold; and there is a sad stoy for nearly every good one w/ Bettas. It's a good thing they can substitute a portion of their O2 through the air itself! :( Greyhound resques have a lot of happy stories too...

You are right about the your 1st point. Too bad Bettas are hardy enough to take the abuse well enough. How many ppl do you know that have had a betta live their nature life expectancy of around 8-10 years? <-Don't quote me on that, it may be more...

The whole mass-production side of the industry sucks as a whole, period.

Supporting animal abuse!!?? Are you kidding me!! Please! I am just telling you the facts on the way they are shipped.
You're standing up for how betta's are treated. If not, I'm not sure why you're getting so upset with me speaking out against it. If keeping a betta in a small plastic bag where it can't even swim isn't animal abuse, I don't know what is.

And who said they are kept in a shot glass at my store. Far from it.
I just did a search in this thread for "shot glass" and you are the only one who mentioned it.

It sounds to me like you're supporting animal abuse. There's no excuse for shipping bettas in little plastic bags or keeping them in little plastic cups. Even large goldfish bowls are better than that.

Right so...presumably you won't be purchasing from people who ship them like that...your options ?

Anyone with an ounce of common sense, having read this thread, could not agree with your accusation against MM, and it is an accusation and it is quite a poisonous accusation...IMO

Not sell bettas or find someone who won't ship them like that, even if they're more expensive.

A couple posts back she was defending keeping bettas in plastic cups. That's animal abuse, IMO.

A couple posts before that she said I was "irresponsible at best" for wanting to keep bettas in tanks instead of plastic cups and for employees to remain professional to complaints of keeping them like this. So I think my comment that it *sounded* like she was supporting animal abuse was justified. I don't actually think she abuses animals.

good luck to you - I mean that.

I don't think you should cast allegations of abuse about so lightly...it's quite clear that the person you are accusing is not an abuser of animals.

I did use the term shot glass.

I wasn't talking about marinemom's store though, just fish stores in general.

ther are some good stores arround hear, Are Petlands people seem to know what they are doing, They keep ther bettas in 2L glass things, change the water every day. they look like clear cookie jars without the lids... but they could clean up the hamster cages, it smells a bit funky.
