LFS sickened me today.

A couple posts before that she said I was "irresponsible at best" for wanting to keep bettas in tanks instead of plastic cups and for employees to remain professional to complaints of keeping them like this. So I think my comment that it *sounded* like she was supporting animal abuse was justified. I don't actually think she abuses animals.

...as an edited explanation...IMO...it falls short...but hey...I'm going to stop defending somebody who needs no defending

Back to... umm... one of the first... debates?

Here in Nova Scotia, Yarmouth, we have a LFS that takes REALLY good care of their bettas and other fish, and everything else, and give accurate info

Come on down to Yarmouth town!!

my main LFS is the best i've ever been to, and they keep their bettas in tiny cups. I do not thinkt hey are evil for doing this, as the bettas really are in there for a very short period of time. I never see the same bettas twice every time I go into the store. many times the shelves go bare in a day. they also make sure they go to bowls/tanks of at least 2 gallons and assume an "I told you so" policy.

I'm only going to respond to the original poster to say this:

I work in a pet store and I find the way the employee spoke to you to be appalling. I would never, EVER have the nerve to insinuate to a customer that they know nothing simply because they do not work in a pet store. In fact, I'd go so far to say that a majority of pet store employees haven't the slightest clue what they are talking about. Working in said store does NOT make you God. I think you had every right to say what you did to him. He deserved it and you should get his *** fired out of there. Civility be damned.

We were at PetSmart today and my hubby wanted to buy two more tiger barbs. The tank with the tigers that were of compatable size to be placed in with our other barbswas very questionable. The water seemed cloudy, several of the barbs were head standing, and one had feces ( a long strand ) hanging from his anus the entire time (at least 45 minutes) that we were there. I told him that I did not think that that was a healthy tank and I would be afraid to put any of those fish in our tank. The employee told me that all of the sick fish were isolated in a sick tank in the back, these were just stressed because they came in the Tuesday shipment and that she could catch the healthiest looking fish for us so not to worry. fortunately my hubby settled on some green barbs from a different tank. When the regular fish lady that we usually deal with came over, the first one told her that I had been doing my research, and knew almost as much as her.... whatever... I just know what I have read about picking healthy fish. I think I will stick to going to the LFS even though they are much further away and more expensive. I have been to PetSmart when there were several dead fish in the tanks and I got the same, "well, those are from the new shipment and they just got too stressed.." hmmmph

Agreed 100%.
