I bought two German rams and both died within days! I went back to the store in which I got them to get my money back I was under the 7 day guarantee. Well they tested my water and it was

Ammonia 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates 5

They would not give me my money back because my nitrates where 5 and not zero. I kid not! I asked to speak to the manager and she was horrible to me I mean horrible made me cry actually afterward but anyway she took me to a sign and showed me posted on their wall that said ammonia must be 0 and Nitrates 0 for guarantee. I told her that must be wrong I think it is suppose to say nitrites! She said the owner wrote it do you think she's wrong! You are a newcomer we are professionals! Ask anyone else in the aquarium business and they will tell you the same thing so I'm coming to you. Am I nuts should my nitrates be 0!!!

No, you are right, they are wrong. You will always have nitrates in a fish tank unless you have a heavely planted tank.. It should be Nitrite.

Find several sources of information, print it out, as well as take the inserts from your test kits and go back and show them. Even if they don't give you your money back or replace your fish, they should be shown who is wrong. This sounds to me like a gimmick they use so as to not replace fish. All tanks have nitrate in them for the most part.

never go back there again. you arent nuts. they obviously dont know what they are doing if they confuse nitrates and nitrites; even then, if your fish died because of water issues they should replace it. nitrites are even worse than ammoina.
in my area, one LFS will give you a cupon to come back for a replacment fish if your fish dies because of water issues, and you can use that cupon once your parameters are under control. IMO that guarantee is pretty rediculous.

better yet, go back there and give her the adress to this site and tell her to tell them what she told you. lol

you can always go around and find articles on cycling, either here or somehwere else, to make your case and demand a refund.

go to one of their tanks and ask to test the water. either way they lose. if the tank has nitrates, you can tell them that nitrates are a sign that your tank is fully cycled etc. and you demand your money back. if it has nitrites, you can tell them the reason that the rams died, and if they reject what you say, pull out some articles on the adverse effects of ammoina and nitrites in a tank, and then demand you money back and tell them you are never going back.

That's messed up!:mad2:

Excuse me, but you are correct. The Ammonia and NitrIes are the critical water parameters.

NitrAtes are also harmful, but anything under 40.0 ppm is considered okay for most fish!

That's B.S. I would bring her in a print out of the cycling process myself, and demand to speak to the manager.

I know Rams (especially German Blues) are quite susceptable to new tanks and freshly cycled ones, but ur parameters are great!

Sorry for your loss...

tell her to test her/the stores tanks, then she will see some nitrates and you can point it out that way as well, of course you can follow the lie and say this store has bad water and no one should buy from it, but not everyone is like me. At least laugh at her maybe :P. Im sure the dealers tank will haev a pretty high nitrate level since there so heavily stocked

Nitrates are fine if kept below 40 (different fish different levels but most are fine below 40)

Actually I did that I said well can we test one of your tanks and she said "No I'm not going to do that" So then I did walk over and get out the test instructions from a box on the shelf and said can I show you this but she wouldn't listen so as I was walking out I said can you do me a favor and read it and you'll see you owe me an apology but I don't know if she will.

I was thinking of printing out some stuff for her my hubby said I should bring her a copy of aquariums for dummies!
And yes this was the manager!

Oh and to make matter worse I left this part out but when I did bring home the rams I had some extra critters. A Centipede, a cricket and some other bug ran out of the paper bag they were in. I kid you not!

I mean the store doesn't look really dirty but gross!

ok, i can see the cricket. its happened to me once or twice where a feeder cricket cjumps into the paper bags sitting right next to the tank that the crickets are held into (free food for the fish lol). the centepede is just nasty. this place is obviously not up to standards.
