Oto and Betta - What do you think?

Honestly, ottos are such a low bioload fish that, presuming you have enough food for them by way of algae'n whatnot, you wouldn't be overstocked with just 3 bettas if you got 2-3 ottos. Especially if you have any kind of live plant in there.

As for compatability, i have a pair of full-grown ottos in my 10G with my full grown male betta and he doesn't bother them at all.

Do you have a divider in the tank or something? Cause two bettas (male or female) generally is a bad call, the males will fight, and with the females theres not enough to establish a heirachy so the underdog gets picked on. Im curious as to how its working out!?

You could keep a male and female betta in the same tank if it was maybe 40g or larger and you kept a good eye on them...but otherwise it is quite risky.

Otos and bettas are one of the best combinations I've kept. I am also currently keeping a betta with SAEs without a problem.

Esoter1c, there are three female Bettas in the tank currently. They reworked their hierarchy after I lost the fourth one I had in there with them, so all is well on that front.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

vt_snowman87, I've thought about Cories, but I don't want to have to change over to a bigger tank (did I say that? :p).

echoofformless, ah yes, SAE's. As you say, a bigger tank. :) Glad to hear your experience with Betta's and Oto's has been good.

NinjaPirate, thanks for the comment on the bioload. I was wondering about that.

Yeah, there's no way I'd keep three MALE bettas in a 10-gallon... unless I wanted to see a death-match. Three females would feasibly work as long as none of them were extremely territorial or aggressive.

Personal note: I never kept my bettas with others. I didn't like forcing them to dominate or be dominated by each other. It seemed to add a lot of unecessary stress... even for my girls. They always showed their best color, ate best, and seemed happiest when I had them in separate containers than when I tried keeping them in my community tank (the females only).

It is up to your own personal preference and opinion, but I never liked seeing my girls in horizontal stripes. That usually meant they were stressed out.... not to mention any girl will tell you that horizontal stripes are hardly flattering. :dance2:

They seem like a fairly gentle bunch actually and seem to enjoy being together. They were introduced to the tank at the same time, so that probably has a lot to do with it. I wouldn't think of trying out a new Betta with the same group. Just asking for trouble.

Actually the SAEs are living in a five gallon with my betta at the moment. They will soon live in something quite a bit larger, but for now they are more than happy where they are.

From my experience I have found that SAEs don't grow all that quickly and can thus be housed in smaller tanks for quite a while. Even fully grown they aren't too big for maybe minimum of a 20g long. They're only a little under six inches, and they aren't particularly poopy so they don't add a ton to the bioload. Not to mention that is a maximum size - most of them won't get much larger than maybe 4-5 inches at best.

It's the CAEs that get too large for smaller tanks. They grow to 11 inches and often become somewhat aggressive and messy.

my male is living with my 2 females, all works out fine, not fighting or what, they swim and eat together.. no aggressive behaviours after abt a few days being together.. they've been together for weeks now..

one more thing, they don't spawn too, because the current in my tank is too strong..
