My Neon Tetra looks really fat...

Given that I've had my piggy little neons for a good while now and see this exact same situation on a regular basis, I'd definately suggest just waiting to check the fish in the morning.

Research all you want (you could easily prove me wrong,) but remember to be careful with any chemicals or meds.

I hope your little neon is okay!

Well, I looked today and I didn't see the fish floating or struggling. As a matter of fact, I didn't see the little guy at all. I looked everywhere and started to worry that he may have passed away. Eventually, I found em, hiding inside a rock decoration. Phew. No more big bellies. I can't believe that tetra ate so much. He may have out-eaten my silver molly. So, all is well.

what is swim bladder, and why does floating foods cause it?
All fish have a swim bladder. It's what helps them maintain their equilibrium while swimming underwater. It keeps them from bobbing up to the surface or sinking to the bottom. Many fish can get swim bladder disease from swallowing air when consuming floating foods at the surface. This can cause them to appear "drunk" while swimming, because they can't keep their balance underwater. It is often extremely difficult to treat.

Yep, one give away for Swim Bladder Disease is a big belly and they get a bit tilted.

Nope, no eggs. The belly is gone. Just ate too much on that one feeding.

I had a neon that used to chase all the other fish away from the cory cat's sinking pellet so he could hog it all himself. That was after the flakes. I've never seen such a fat neon. I think some of them just don't know when to stop.

If your neon keeps getting bloated after feeding times you can soak the food for a little while in some water, and then feed it to them by sucking it up with a turkey baster, and then spray it in the water. This will make the food sink so that the fish don't swallow a lot of air with their food. I had this same problem with one of my lonfin zebra danios.

I had a friend who owned a gassy fish. He would bob and fart bubbles. She would just give him a gentle squeeze and after that he would be fine.

I have 3 neons in my community tank...early on I noticed the largest and smallest would swell with every meal...you could actualy watch their bellies expand...I haven't changed the feedings, they are either eating less, or have grown out of it...all are healthy
