Lights Out - Algae Gone!

I'm going to turn my lights off starting tonight (Tuesday) and then turn them back on Friday...

I don't have alot of corals to worry about, but from the results others have experienced, I don't think it would really matter...

Im just excited to find a way to get rid of the unsitely algae that makes a beautiful tank ugly...

If you haven't checked this out you should... I've spent alot of time reading this forum and it's really got me going...

So lights off, here we go!

turning the lights off will work to kill the algae but as soon as you turn them back on the algae will bloom again. It is better to fix the problem rather than hide it. Check your phosphates nitrates and water circulation.

I thought the same thing... however if you read the post you'll read about how this helps long term and how some people even schedule this like water changes...

Yes fixing imbalances would be the best in long term but this will have a dramatic effect that will up the anti...

Also this shows a good way to get rid of some of the most stubborn of algaes...

Or think of it the other way around... when the algae dies off it turns into dissolved organics wich can be taken out by your skimmer.

Today is my first day with the lights off, I get little ambient room light in my tank and virtually no sunlight... so Im not wrapping a sheet or anything arround my tank.

I'll post my results that I see friday...

Why not just get a UV sterilizer? It will fix your algae problem with the lights on. (no pun intended)

From this post on you're going to hear people tell you its a bad idea, that it kills all sorts of beneficial things in the water, but a protein skimmer does the same thing, and how many of us are using them?

I mentioned the no lights awhile back but I can't remember which post I responded to. I am also going to try this but for only 2 days because I have not had any bad algae in a long time. I will coincide this with my next planned wc.
