Cherry Shrimp swimming laps...

One of my Cherry Shrimps is doing something rather odd. He's swimming laps around the tank, and not just once, but over and over again all morning. His colour is also a fair bit paler than the others in the tank.

This is the first time I have had inverts in my tanks, so I'm not sure what to think of this. Is this an expected behaviour? A potential illness?

I wish my Bamboo Shrimp moved more often. I'm not sure if this is normal; what are your water parameters?

my ghost shrimp are constantly swimming around the tank.. especially at feeding time.

Parameters are fine, the tank is fully cycled. 0 Ammonia, 0 NitrIte, ~10ppm NitrAte. The tank is planted, so I leave the NitrAtes around 15ppm for the plants.

I guess I was only concerned because it was only one shrimp and this behaviour is completely new. Maybe it was because I fed my Endlers some frozen brine shrimp this morning, and this is a shrimp solidarity protest?

There could be something in the tank that's irritating the shrimp and it's trying to find a way out. When I first put ghost shrimp in my 55 gallon Discus tank I noticed they would swim up and down the glass for hours. I thought this was probably normal behavior. After some investigation and loosing one shrimp I realized the chloramine remover I was using may not be safe for shrimp. I switched to Kent Ammonia Detox which is for invertebrates and soon noticed this behavior stopped, they seemed much calmer.
Another example comes to mind. When I added an Indian Almond leaf to my Cherry red shrimp tank I noticed this again, shrimp swimming up and down and around the tank like they wanted to find a way out. I removed the leaf did a 25% water change and they calmed down. I later read that shrimp are very sensitive to tannins. After soaking the leaf for a few weeks I added it back in, there was no unusual behavior. Now they love munching on it.
Guess just because it's safe for fish doesn't mean it's ok for the shrimp.

Maybe theres some track meet coming up you aren't aware of?

Cherry Shrimp swimming laps

I have noticed this happening also. What I believe is the male shrimp are the ones making the laps, & the female shrimp are usually grazing. JMHO Debb55
