ok so I'm getting to the point, soon... were I will be getting another fish for my tank. What would be small and safe fish with my set up? I've considered getting a Clownfish, Longnosed Hawkfish, Six line Wrass, a Coral Beauty Angel, Court Jester Goby, or Banji Cardinal... Any and all other suggestions are most welcome. I want something with alot of color, character, but wont eat or be eaten by anything in my tank.

31 lbs live rock
1 firefish
2 fire shrimp
9 hermits
2 turbo snails
2 featherdusters
bunch of other hitchhikers

I'm a huge goby fan and there are so many different ones to choose from (as well as dwarf angels). The royal gramma basslet! In my opinion they're beautiful to look at with great personalities. How about clownfish and/or chromis?

I only have about a 1/2 to 1 1/2 thick sand. I'm not sure thats thick enough for a goby/blenny?

I have also considered the royal gramma for a long time. i hear they can be territorial sometimes and a jerk. I guess i'd have to get a small one.

I don't know much about chromis...
 
If'n I were you, I'd definitely get a clown or two. They're hardy, easy to care for, and just plain interesting inhabitants. Especially if you can get a pair going.

Chromies are basically damsels that don't turn out to be big jerks. They'll also school (sometimes, from what I hear).

The hawkfish are cool (I just picked up a falco/pygmy), but I hear they'll eat anything that they can, including snails and shrimps. Definitely good personality, though!

Depending on what color fish you're looking for, the small angels can be fun, as long as you don't have any other fish that looks even remotely like them.

Coral Beauties are pretty
Flame angels are awesome if you don't have much red in your tank
Lemonpeels are beautiful if you want some yellow.
Potters angels, although hard to find, are really pretty.

I recently ordered a fish (which my cat ate...bad kitty) from www.nyaquatics.com. It came the next day and shipping was less than $4. They have some new flame angels in stock, too.

Anyway, the sky is the limit, but be careful. Stress in the tank due to aggression from your fish can be no fun. :)

A clown or two is def a possibility. When you say they pair up, do you mean they would hang out together or something?

Coral Beauties are pretty cool, Do you think one would be successful in a 30 gallon tank? I have live rock and some hiding spots, but not alot really. Plus I have a Firefish which I don't know if they would get along.

I think a Flame angel would hate the red on my firefish and my red fire shrimp, but they are awesome looking.

The lemon peel is REALLY cool looking.
 
Well, I think the fish have to feel that they have to compete with another fish to cause problems...at least with the type of fish we're talking about.

I had a small tang who had the same body shape as my coral beauty. They fought all the time. Then I got rid of that coral beauty and got a lemonpeel. The tang ripped it apart. I had assumed the problem was coral, but I think it was size/shape.

However, angelfish are so different from firefish, that I wouldn't think it'd be an issue at all. You could check liveaquaria's compatibility guide, but I think you have to take that with a grain of salt, too.

Both angels I had were just grazers. They'd roam around rather slowly and pick at stuff. They weren't the big swimmers that the tang I had was. So, they'd probably be fine in a 30 gallon...as long as they had plenty of hiding places and food to munch on.

But, as you know, I'm not an expert...just someone who spends WAYYYYY too much time reading on the internet and then trying to put into practice when they get home in the PM. :)

hehe, many of us are!!! I appreciate your help though. really I do.

Hmmm, yeah, its a possibility with the coral b. I will ask my Adventure Aquarium biologist friends, they have good advice also.

A clownfish or two seem like the most sensible fish if I don't want any aggression issues? no?

I keep changing my mind!!!!!!!

For the most part yes, though I had issues with mine picking at chromis, and eventualy clowns will learn to start biting your hand... suposedly they can draw blood when they get larger (gloves will fix that though).
 
Clowns are just awesome though. They swim funny, they follow you around the tank, they swim funny. Oh, and if you can get them to host in something it's really quite cute.

That is, if a dude is allowed to say something is 'cute' and save any sense of manhood.
