new fish in a hundred gallon tank

i have a 100 gal tank with goldfish that are going to be put in a pond. does anyone know what kind of cichlids to put into the empty tank. i also want to put some plants into there too. i am open to any suggestions

Depends on your personal taste the good news is you have alot to choose from African, South American, New World. Do you want a shoaling species tank? An all male African for color tank? etc. Just do some google research and go with your heart

Anything you want basically.

You need to decide if you want the bigger, meaner cichlids (jags, RD, GT, oscars ect) or the smaller cichlids (FM's, mbuna africans, convicts, ect); or something in between (JD's, sevs, other africans, angels, ect)

so many choices its mind boggling lol.

Also need to decide what kind of landscape you want. Some cichlids love tons of rocks, others can be with plants, other destroy plants, ECT


I have always told myself that if I had a big tank like that I would look into green terrors because they are a awesome looking fish, but they get big and are aggressive. But, knowing me, I would probably just move over the Sevs I have and buy more sevs!!

Well, africans or american cichlids?

And do you want it cichlid dominated? or do you want the cichlids(s) to be the main attraction with some other schooling fish in there as well? do you want breeding cichlids?

SOOO many options man... narrow it down!

Cichlids in general are pretty hard on plants. Most will either dig them up or eat them. That's going to limit your selection. You're also going to have to choose plants that can live in the cichlids water parameters or vice-versa.

yes. many cichlids will dig or tear plants up so your fish list is limited.

oh, okay. i want mostly some SA cichlids and i might add some big tetras in there as well. i really don't think breeding SA cichlids is a good idea in a 100 gallon tank unless they aren't very aggressive

Here's a few links for common South American and Central American cichlids. Take a looksie and like most folks will tell ya go with what you personally like the most, don't let the guy in the LFS talk you into something that he has overstock on.
