Will 2 400 watt 20000k MH's be over kill for a 100 gallon, 20" tall, for LPS and softies, cause I don't like SPS, if hung 16" above the tank?

I plan to have the lights in the center, and have the LR slope down, highest in the back and lowest in the front. The LPS will be at the back and the softies will be in the front.

how long is the tank?
i would recomend 250s in a tank that shallow if you want to keep lps and softies. i have a 4400 over my 40 breeder and have found that i am limited to where i keep some lps and all softies.

I'd say yes, 800 watts on a 100 gallon might be overkill if you aren't going for the hardcore stuff.

I just say that because I have 1/4 of that on my 55g and lps and softies grow great and have good coloring.

But then I'm a big fan of using the minimum that will work with the best results.

Maybe 2x250 would do you just as good and cost significantly less (elect.)

Yeah, for softies and LPS, 2 x 250w MH would be fine. Even then, you could grow certain SPS with the proper placement if you wanted to.

DUDE didn't we go over this in another thread??? Just because I can't resist asking, why do you ask questions and when you don't get the answer you want you go post another thread hoping to find someone to side with you. Do what you want BUT it will not benifit your corals and many softies will not like that much light and you will be wasting lots of money on your electric bill. Hanging them 16 inches above the tank is just crazy, it is a waste of light, if you go with 250's (like I suggested in another thread) you can hang them at normal highth AND save money. Hate to say it but this reposting of any questions you don't like really looks like troll behavior. But it has obviously shown that you have no respect for my opinion so this will be my last post in your threads. Good luck with your tank.

P.S. to those of you who may think this is rude please look at all this guys posts, he does this all the time, he also posts answers to questions he has no clue about, google can help anyone but real experience is what is needed most of the time. Me and others have addressed these issues and his lack of will to research on his own many times, I just can't take it any more.

not all light is created equal though. 500 watts from a halide is much different than 500 watts of pc. different halide bulbs of the same wattage will also give different results (though probably nothing noticeable other than coloration). ultimately the usable par (i think thats what its called) is what is so important. watts mean nothing if they dont produce enough usable light (some form of PAR). well, i really dont know the terms lol, but i do understand them... as you can see.
with 250 watt halides, you can still grow a wide selection of SPS if you chose to do so in the future. Anthony Calfo stresses that light is only the 3rd most important factor after flow (forgot already what else he said).. so, even with limited lighting, you can still succeed if you provide proper nutrients/food and flow.
