Hey,

I've recently started a 29 gallon planted tank and have purchased a 65w cf lighting kit for it. Only problem is that the kit came with a saltwater type bulb and I need a freshwater. So my questions are, what is the best bulb to get for growing plants and where is the best place to get it? Also, will my plants be okay in the meanwhile using the saltwater bulb which is half 10,000k and half blue actinic. Any help would be appreciated.

You want a bulb 6500K-10000K bulb for plants. Lightbulbsdirect.com is a good place to get them. I use 65000K Philips High Color Rendering bulbs and they don't look yellow at all to me.

CF lights, unless they're the screw in fluorescents, only comes in k ratings between 6500k-10000k and actinics so choose anything aside from the actinics or half actinics.

With your current 50/50 bulb you could maintain lower light plants.

Huh what? When did that happen? I've seen as low as 4100k and as high as 12000k.

Yeah, they're a fluorescent light, much like any other fluorescent light. They come in about the same spectrum as any other. They just happen to be bent in a U with all the terminals on one end.
