fair price to charge for cleaning friends 55G?

What goes around comes around....if he's a friend do not charge....never charge friends or family....turn it into a social event....like the beer and pizza idea

Nonsense. Real friends and family don't abuse someone's kindness just because they want to have a fish tank, but refuse to do any maintenance on it because they're too bloody lazy. It's like asking one of your family members every week to wash your car for free. And as for beer or piza...that's pretty much charging too. The point is that there's nothing wrong with helping someone out now and then, sometimes multiple times for the same thing, but if it feels like someone's taking advantage of you then it would be stupid to continue. Most of the guys like me with 1 or 2 jobs, large family and a nice hobby really don't have the time anyways to take care of lazy bums.

We all have our own values.....

Personally I'd help someone get it in order for free but to take on the responsibility of maintaining a tank on a weekly or monthly basis compensation is in order. I'd also draft up a single letter of agreement to state what you'll do so that expectations are laid out clearly up front. It might sound a bit too formal but it is a business transaction and meant to protect you both and hopefully avoid any hard feelings from a misunderstanding.

it needs to be weekly or not at all and your friend needs to either get off his can and do it himself or get a new hobby that doesn't involve degradating the lives of other beings as a result of his laziness.

:grinyes:

I'd rather talk to him and persuade him to start maintaining his tank if he wants the pleasure to watch a tank full of healthy fish. If not, then the tank should go to someone else who is more responsible to the hobby like you.;)

I agree that would be the best outcome, but sometimes you have to aim for something less than perfect.... I do have space available though. ;)

Do it for free if his "Cute" sister or GF hangs around. But if he has sisters like my buddies I would charge him double!!

:)

I'm with you fellas. Some food and booze in return is appropriate. On the bright side, you can help maintain your friendship by doing this 'cause you are hanging out and relaxing while you are doing the maintenance. If you can, keep him around to 'help' you maintain his tank so you can describe what all you are doing, perhaps show him just how easy it is to do. Start simple with just a PWC, then get into the things that take more effort like filter cleaning. He obviously thinks it's too much work for him to do, which is why he's offering to pay you.

I've tried showing him how to do it himself. he doesn't have the time. Three kids and he owns a business. And yeah I've told him when he doesn't want it anymore I'll take it. Oh and I decided to just do it for free and when I need a hand with something I won't feel bad for asking.
