    Sickly Neon?

bit of an update.... it's been a week and he's not dead, but he's still swimming rather strangely. it's almost as if one side of him isn't functioning properly. if he were a person i would think something neurological or maybe just a broken limb, but I don't know A. if a fish can have a stroke...

    green algae

I would suggest a black out. Do a large water change and then completely cover the tank so that absolutely no light gets in. Wait 72-96hrs. Leave the tank alone (no feeding, no checking in...fish will be fine for 3-4 days). When you open the tank back up the algae should be dead (hopefully)...

    Any old moss will do?

for some reason i have to doubt it...just like you can't put any old plants under water. some (most) terrestrial plants will die once submerged. so unless the moss is aquatic I'd expect it'd die too. but i might be wrong...not a botanist :headshake2:

    15g Moss Rescape

So I decided to rescape my 15g into a moss / anubias low light tank. Here's how it came out so far: The moss on the skinnier branches is taiwan, the stuff on the log is a mix of christmas and weeping. The white mesh in / on the substrate has java moss in it, which I'm hoping I'll be...

    Sickly Neon?

Tank size is the same. Inhabitants are the same minus 1 neon and the apple snail. He is eating fine (was having trouble actually getting the food yesterday, but since his swimming has gotten better he can eat). I don't know about poo'ing...probably. Neons don't have the same long-poo tendrils...

    Sickly Neon?

So I went away for a couple days and I came back to find one of my neons acting rather oddly. He can't seem to swim properly. He seems to be constantly listing to one side (he was actually doing spirals at one point). Today his swimming seems a bit better, but his coloration seems off. It...

How Much Light for Moss-Only Tank?

is 5500 ok? that makes life easier. the bulbs I have now are 6500 and I couldn't remember exactly what range I needed so I was looking for ones with the same K rating. Hmm....still leaves the question. 18W or 28w?

How Much Light for Moss-Only Tank?

18W, 20W, 26W, or 30W (i.e. 2x9W, 2x10W....etc) These seem to be my best options in this range. I don't know what I'll find at the store, but these seem to be the most likely options that will have the right K rating. I just want to have an idea of what would be best, since I may get stuck...

How Much Flow in Planted Tank - Add a Powerhead?

I thought that 66gph seemed low....i got that off another site. so that's more than enough flow. ok cool. as for nitrates....I do more than a 25% anyway (probably closer to 40%). I check on nitrate levels periodically, never break 15ppm. thanks for the heads up though. plecos definitely are...

    Stocking a 5 gallon

African dwarf frogs stay about the size of a quarter full grown, so you could definitely put a pair (they like to have company) in there. I doubt they would bother any other animal in your tank (I've never seen mine bother anyone). The only issue is feeding them, which can be a pain if you have...

About the Aqua Clear 50 Powerfilter

I use an AC 50 on my 15 gallon. I must agree, it's a very nice filter. It's also in my bedroom and I don't hear a thing at night :D

    Pleco stock question

in part it comes down to fish temperament. I have an albino BN and a clown in my 15, which I'm sure most here would advise against. But they're been together for about 4 months now and I've yet to have an issue. I see them sitting next to each other all the time, don't seem to care that the...

What is your bristlenose pleco's favorite foods?

Zucchini and cucumber, like most have said, with an algae wafer every few days. I boil the vegetables and then run them under cold water, only because it gets them to sink (don't know why, but it does).

Is it true? Activated Carbon removes essential plant nutrients from the water?

don't run carbon in your filter unless you need to remove medication or some toxin or something like that.

    Black Out - How long?

well, the only plant that's going to be going back in to the tank is a small anubias. and already have some plans for cleaning it up (used in the past, very effective). the rescape is really a complete overhall lol but ok, 4 days then? sounds good. thanks :D

    Black Out - How long?

So in my ongoing effort to eliminate as much algae in my tank as possible before I rescape it (I know I will never get rid of it all, but might as well try to get as much of it as possible), I'm going to do a black out. I've taken pretty much everything out besides the substrate and the fish...

How Much Flow in Planted Tank - Add a Powerhead?

well really my 2 major concerns is keeping debris off the plants and making sure the fish are happy. i'm reorganizing the tank, so I may have no issues. until now I've had the underwater filter and the HOB pointing in the same direction, so I think I did have some dead spots. I'm going to try...
