    Reintroduction: Chucks Planted Aquarium

I think it's been 10 years since I've emailed him, very nice guy. He did not help with my web site though, that's Greg Watson. Chuck lived in CO I think. All sorts of things could have happened to have folks drop in/out of this hobby. I just hope he's happy and doing well. Regards, Tom Barr

Wow! Excel really does kill bba!!

If you used good CO2 system, then it's much easier to control and manage all algae, not just BBA, DIY can be done..but many fail to do so. GAS tanks can help a great deal, but poor management of CO2 causes the most algae and fish deaths of any one thing in this hobby. Excel can kill fish as...

    Fert deficiency - Alternanthera reineckii

Well, you can simply use relative measures, which is my point really. 1. So for lighting: use metal screen to layer much like layers of shade cloth on nursery plants in a garden. 2. CO2: vernier caliper handles my incremental adjustments easier. 3. Trim and prune to maintain the general...

    Fert deficiency - Alternanthera reineckii

So less light and no CO2..........why do you think the plants are not having any issues based on my prior post? I too have had nice color and nice growth in non CO2 lower light tanks with this plant. You can easily rule out ratios or absolute Ca or nutrient issues, but.......they will not be...

    Fert deficiency - Alternanthera reineckii

the problem is you tradxe off KHJ accuracy for loss of pH accuracy with the drop checker. You also really lose a lot of the response time. Drop checkers(DC's), have about 2 hour delay, many have trouble treading the colors, you have 3 basically, yellow, green and blue, not much in between...

    Fert deficiency - Alternanthera reineckii

CO2, CO2 and CO2, the drop checker is not the most accurate method, there's no way you can say much within 10ppm at best, and most folks are more in the 20ppm range or error. I keep 50-80ppm and have loads of fish, but I measure it very critically and calibrate. Other so called Ca++ sensitive...

    Fert deficiency - Alternanthera reineckii

No ya don't, that entire thread was full of rubbish and speculations. K+, Ca++ etc........ How the heck do not know if you just needed to stay up on the CO2? When you double the plant biomass, what do you think happens as the plants get closer to the light and a lot more biomass with respect...

    CO2 Injection

That's where most folks wanna be, but many fall into the traps and never make it, quit the hobby etc. CO2 and light are the two big keys, master those, then the rest is easy. Thank me by helping a few other folks. It's the only real way any of us can help repay the efforts of others...

Do Jungle val shoots poison other plants?

So why do so many run around claiming that is how plants retard algae? Many do even when faced with some rather basic evidence for controls like water changes and activated carbon that would remove it. Afraid not, why do you assume that these are saturated or that any build up occurs? You still...

    Green Water Killing MegaThread!

Good idea, GW BTW has no impact on the plants.........just looks bad, but does no harm to the plants really. So such issues can wait till you fix the root of the issue. CO2 needs care and good use, never rush with it. Slow, methodical...........adjustments......... impatience leads to dead...

    Green Water Killing MegaThread!

Here's my 60 cube: I have black flourite sand. I use 96W of light, or 1.5 W/gal and the distance is about 1 meter from the light to the bottom of the tank......quite a distance. CO2 is closely watched and a gas tank. Fish load is high. Filter is a sealed Wet/dry and an additional Rio 800...

    Green Water Killing MegaThread!

Well, DIY CO2 on a larger tank, high light...........I think nuttrients are minor issue. Get a CO2 gas tank. Or run the UV all the time till you do. You spent the $$$ on a larger tank, filters and then got high light..........but went all cheap on CO2. This is the opposite of what you should...

    Green Water Killing MegaThread!

Few have it 2x:cool: If so, you have several issues occurring. Lack of nutrients is one, lack of CO2 is another and .......... And I do not see any info on lighting, but......I bet it's high as well. Low light + good CO2, plenty of nutrients......... Then such things like algae are much more...

Do Jungle val shoots poison other plants?

And unfortunately, folks often seldom read that part where she states that it is speculative. She's clear, but folks gloss that part over and run around suggesting this. No, not just the OP, but about once every 3-6 months, someone on some forum makes a ta-do about it. Folks really should...

Do Jungle val shoots poison other plants?

Allelopathy is baloney, even the research has many problems demonstrating it. Aquarist will have far more issues even coming remotely close. Someone gets some idea, and without any good research showing it occurs(it's tough to show even in terrestrial systems, let alone aquatic systems where...

    Green Water Killing MegaThread!

UV, even a cheapy off ebay etc will work, 3 days later, you have no Gw and no issues further/likely again from then on..........but.......other algae issues may come home to roost. So focus on plants and what they need and do not assume your parameter are/where good and all if you have algae...

newbie question: why is high ph and hardness bad for plants?

All this chem is fine and dandy, till.........you start enriching with CO2 gas. This throws those equilibrium off a fair amount. You can use the pH/KH chart to measure CO2............but this assuems there are no other acids and that all the alkalinity is bicarbonate. This can be very...
