(Utricularia grammifolia) UG and EI dosing

Yes, but not that large. I like grassy look, not bladders for scaping.

(Utricularia grammifolia) UG and EI dosing

Several folks have stated that UG prefers low nutrients and acidic water. This is what it looks like with rich ferts(EI dosing) and higher GH(about 3-4).

    Newbie Guide to PPS-Pro

Simply put: you cannot argue with higher nutrients = algae or poorer management. It's easier then one can focus on more important things, like gardening and growing nice plants, which is why 95% of us got into the hobby to begin with, not to fiddle and micromanage. If you want to slow things...

    Newbie Guide to PPS-Pro

Here's a tank runnign at 55ppm and loaded with Rainbows and ton of shrimps, it is my tank and I have not added studio lighting or massive flashes or stopped the high current. When you do those things, then you take the pic, you have far more pearling. Light is about 50 micromoles over the bottom...

    PMMD mixture (Mgamer20o0)

A large pack of amano shrimp will really keep a tank clean of algae and prevent it from taking hold FYI...........good critters.

    PMMD mixture (Mgamer20o0)

Well, the original idea was to supply everything in non limiting fashion EXCEPT for PO4 with PMDD: http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/Fertilizer/sears-conlin.html http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/Fertilizer/pmdd-tim.html A few of us quickly falsified the hypothesis about PO4, then went after the other...

    PMMD mixture (Mgamer20o0)

It depends.......I add it because I know adding excess/non limiting amounts rules out a deficiency. This is MUCH more about growing plants and much less about killing algae. PMDD started off as balance between these two issues,m but later folks have realized it is ALL about growing plants well...

    PMMD mixture (Mgamer20o0)

The steps no longer require you to refrig stanky skanky fish stuff where your human food is kept. Not a popular thing to do in many households. Prevents fungi without refrigerating. PO4, use dry and do not mix with anything containing Traces.....they will precipitate out of a solution...

    PMMD mixture (Mgamer20o0)

If you use hot water, the mix will dissolve very easily. Trick no#2 potassium sorbate, maybe a pill or so.....anti fungal agent commonly used in foods. Trick #3 Use Excel in place of for anti fungal: add say 10-20 mls to replace 10-20 mls of water to the solution. 4. Keep some PO4 handy.

black out method effective for spirogyra? and safe for shrimp tanks?

BO's really do not work well for most algae, it'll knock some back a bit...... BGA is about the only one I know will kill it off good if you get at the root cause.

    Fertilizers and Nitrate Readings

Calibrated the test kit to see if the readings are accurate? This is always the 1st step. You may not have any issue. Since the tank is 8 gal, , simply using the Tap and doing a weekly water change of say 4-5 gal will take care of any and all issues with ferts. Just dose good to prevent...

Sand as substrate and no CO2?

Please explain why sand or any inert sediment would go anaerobic? MTS might.........but there's nothing wrong with that. Plants have roots, which pump O2 deep into sediments, since most plants do grow in sediments deeper than 3" naturally, how do they survive might I ask??? All my tanks have...

    58 Gallon Planted/Breeder Australia Styles

As far as Zebra plecos, I have 9.......they do not do much, not interesting behaviorally, more for $ and to say you did it etc, they also take about 4-5 years to grow up to breeder sizes. Easy to keep etc........but not really much for your $$. They look nice, cute etc, but they just hide and...

    58 Gallon Planted/Breeder Australia Styles

I'd likely get rid of the swords, they will end up looking too large for that space. You might consider a smaller leaf foreground type of plant. Also, you likely need more CO2. Those Dupla 400's do not allow a lot of water through them, so you will need to have some extra flow for the tank and...

    High phosphate level ?

If you have algae, you might just turn off the light and cover the tank for weekend. It should be clean when you return, shut off CO2, do a good water change right before, increase surface current etc. Return and add this stuff back once you get back, do a water change.

    High phosphate level ?

I have been adding 5ppm PO4 3 x a week(as KH2PO4) for the last few years on this tank: Never had any algae issues. PO4 should never be an issue, this is true for non CO2 as well as CO2 enriched planted tanks. In other words, you are doing something else wrong if you think it's PO4. A good...

    Advantages/disadvantages to prescribed dosing methods

Well.............EVERY method suggest adding the same things, just perhaps in different amounts. Some suggest non limiting, other feel limiting is better. I focus more on light and CO2/non CO2, not nutrient,s since these define the rates of uptake and the goals we have with rates of growth...
