    Skimmer vs. Carbon

That's pretty much what I was going for. The long chain aminos and proteins can be picked up by the corals. But I've got enough problems keeping calcium and magnesium high enough... I certainly don't want them pulled out. I'll stick with carbon for now. My tank has very limited room for a...

    water change poll

Yep... "It depends" should be one of the choices. A monster tank with a very light bioload could go a long time without a change. A 10g reef with 5 fish, needs a WC every couple of days.

It started with a phone call........ Drumroll please !!!

Mere awe does not describe it. That is simply the coolest fish room I've ever seen. And using the drip lines is sheer genius.

    water testing roundup

I used test strips for my freshwater tank, but not for salt. I have: calcium, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH, kH I should test the salinity, but I don't. I buy saltwater from the LFS and have them test a sample when I go. After 6 months, it has never changed. I definitely would have calcium...

2 hob filters for 55 gal reef

You could also use both 'wheels' (minus the wheels), a koralia 1 or 2 powerhead, and a maxxijet 1200 with a sponge filter on it. Works great for my 45.

Going blind guessing which color is closest

Titration is where you do one drop at a time until the water changes color, then each drop equals a certain value of the stuff you're measuring. Like a calcium test. Each drop equals 50 ppm calcium. So if it takes 8 drops to get the water to change color, then you've got 400ppm calcium.

Best Place to buy Live Rock?

I did this. I liked working with him very much, but this is rock straight out of the ocean. It is not cleaned in any way and you will get epic hitchikers. I got at least two tiger gobies, a sea urchin, several (large) crabs, and 3 mantis shrimp. It was gorgeous rock, but there really isn't...

    Ogre's SW tank pic update

Just a few new pics of the tank. Things are going semi-well considering a bacterial infection got two of our biggest zoo colonies... it's always something.

    Is this a coco worm?

I've got at least three of these growing in my tank. They are about an inch long and the spray is about the size of a quarter. All of them are hitchikers.

Going blind guessing which color is closest

The left is the Elos pH test kit. The range is from 7.5 to 8.5 and the gradations are very distinct. Top right is my crappy Tetra Test Nitrite kit... difficult, but not impossible to use. Bottom right is the API Ammonia kit... again, pretty easy to tell the difference (at least for...

Best Place to buy Live Rock?

You can also buy good quality dead rock for $2-3 a pound and then just get a few pounds of really good live rock and let the seeding begin. It takes longer, but it is pretty economical.

2 hob filters for 55 gal reef

I'm not a big fan of the biowheels. I do have a HOB filter on the back of my reef, an aquaclear 70. It has a rough sponge, two bags of ceramic noodles, and an occasional bag of carbon. I honestly don't know what the biowheels would do for you and they might hurt. I've heard of the wheels...

Going blind guessing which color is closest

I like the API nitrate and ammonia tests. I use Elos Aquatest for pH (I like the spectrum it generates), kH and Calcium.

Going blind guessing which color is closest

<begin derail> Actually, it almost has to be a woman because they have two X chromosomes. The allele for the cones come on the X and Y chromosomes. Women have two Xs and thus can end up with four different alleles for cones. Guys, because of our short Y chromosome, only have space for three...

    need help to ID

I'd be REALLY careful with flatworm safe. The chemical kills flatworms, but they release toxins when they die. There are many, many more than you see, I've heard of entire tanks being nuked by this. Personally, I get a 5ml syringe from the pharmacy (no needle) and gently suck up any flatworms...

Going blind guessing which color is closest

Find a woman that has 4 types of cones in the eye rather than 3 like 99.9% of humans. The fourth cone gives them much greater color perception. I'm married to one and she can tell color differences very well... she's also a trained artist. That's all I got.

    Skimmer vs. Carbon

A LFS guy (the store will remain nameless) suggested that a skimmer for a lightly loaded tank like mine may not be necessary. Instead, it may be possible to run carbon briefly (or a small bag continually). Theoretically, the carbon would take out the same materials that the skimmer would...

    Zooanthid Toxin poisoning

Got it. Not fun. The zoas have a bacterial infection. We treated with a hydrogen peroxide dip. Me and the missus both got it. Symptoms are much like food poisoning, chills, pain in joints, vomiting, headaches, blurry vision, metallic taste in mouth. Very, very unpleasant. Treatment...

    Mafia #70: The Time Vortex

There were 5 players on day one with multiple votes that never voted Hooked. Those five players were Z, John, LadyG, Noods, Zaffy. The next day, Zaffy and Z basically wasted votes. G ended up on Zsand, Kash voted G and (critically) both Noods and John voted for G and then switched to Zsand...

    Mafia #70: The Time Vortex

What's CI? Is that an investigative role? Wash kash investigated or was it a luck shot? Top suspects... ummm... let me get back to you. Really, at this point I'd stick with my original thoughts and say that John and Noods are more likely mafia... that was what I said that started the whole...
