    FFA aquaculture project

Not necessarily; raising ornamental plants still falls under 'farming', so I don't see why ornamental animals would not also.

    FFA aquaculture project

Do you have the contest description/rules handy? That would help a lot. I assume because it's FFA you would be mainly interested in raising some kind of commercially valuable species. You would also want to produce some new information, not just "I followed these directions and they worked"...

    FFA aquaculture project

Are you restricted to tanks, or can you get access to a pond, livestock tanks, or other larger containers? I think a good project would be to compare growth rates between two similar food species kept under similar conditions; for example, two species of tilapia, or two catfish. I would be...

If you had a 300 gallon aquarium.......

I have a 300, and it's a local biotope. I have logperch, margined madtoms, stonerollers, river chub, several kinds of shiners, creek chubsucker, central mudminnows, redspotted sunfish, and warmouth. If I were to set up a tropical one...which way I went would depend on how much I wanted to...

    Multi-Species Paladarium

I would build a planted aviary, much like what you described, minus the water feature. Then I would add wall of tanks along one side.

    Multi-Species Paladarium

Good luck with it. The birds will be the real sticker; take them out and the whole project becomes much more manageable. Of course most reptiles and amphibians are insectivorous, piscivorous, or both, so careful species selection is key. We're going to need more specific information about...

    fw river eels

In your area, could be American eel (Anguilla rostrata), three-toed amphiuma or congo eel (Amphiuma tridactylum) or lesser siren (Siren intermedia). The last two are salamanders. Put up some pics if you can!

Other fish to keep with fancy goldlfish

Where do you live, RanchuRick? Dojo loaches are illegal in some states. There is also the possibility you could get some nice shiners to accompany the goldfish.

Can Hydrogen Peroxide be used IN the tank on algae?

Yeah, I use peroxide in the tank with no issues. H2O2 breaks down very quickly in the presence of light; the decomposition reaction is 2 H2O2 --> 2 H2O + O2. You can actually use H2O2 to oxygenate the water when your power is down or you are transporting fish.

What is this comming out of the plant? (with pics)

Like Karl said, it usually means there's a puncture; air is leaking from the tissue. It'll stop when the punctured vacuole/s are depleted or the wound is healed over. This steady stream is different from the 'pearling' associated with photosynthesis.

High Light for 10g - Cost Effective

A guy on another forum just recommended this fixture to me. Maybe a little overkill for what you want.

Need to get rid of some bluegill - any ideas?

Try the NANFA trading dock: http://forum.nanfa.org/index.php?showforum=7 You can offer to give them away or trade them (you can't sell natives without a commercial license).

    Gravel and decor choice

Some fish show strong color changes based on substrate color. I don't know about hillstreams, but I have some seminole killifish in a tank with white gravel; they are almost colorless. In a planted, dark substrate tank they have strong patterns.

    Hillstream Loach Tank-Mates

It's too bad you're in the UK, or I could get you plenty of stream-loving species. I believe zebra and giant danios do well in the high current, moderate temp conditions that hillstreams prefer.

    Aquarium Gloves

Do you have a Harbor Freight or other discount tool store nearby? They usually carry long vinyl gloves. They're the same thing Drs. Foster and Smith sell, at a fraction of the cost.

What Should I Put In This Tank?

There are several vendors carrying bluespots right now: Zimmerman's: http://forum.nanfa.org/index.php?showtopic=1948 Jonah's: http://jonahsaquarium.com/JonahSite/fishlist.htm Sach's: http://www.aquaculturestore.com/fwverts.html Those guys also carry a broad selection of other natives. The...

What Should I Put In This Tank?

If I were in VA I'd plant it heavily and grab a trio each of bluespotted and blackbanded sunfish, a dozen or so each of fieryblack and saffron shiners, some tadpole madtoms, and a few assorted killifish.

    Whisper Bio bags

I absolutely agree. The manufacturers' suggestion that you replace your media every month is a shameless attempt to take your money; it actually reduces your filter's effectiveness.
