Frontosas are a bad choice for the OP. They will gladly devour anything small enough to eat, which include most of what the OP wanted in the tank. Severums and most Geophagus are more suitable

danios are fine with small cichlids like apistos, although I'd go with a South American tetra as the schooling fish with apistos

a pair of Bujurquina vittata would look nice, as they stay small and are relatively peaceful.

Using your own cichlid fry as feeders is agreat idea, and the best alternative to store-bought feeders.

they are pretty much saltwater fish, definitely not compatible with discus.

halfbeaks are neat too...very underrated, but in my opinion the most interesting of livebearers.

rainbow cichlids are awesome little cichlids, a pair of them would make a great display in the proposed 40 gallon tank. Add along with them a school of Buenos Aires tetras or something like that, and it would look great.

Even in a huge tank, wouldn't the pacu be too nippy.
