    Remembering my old friend (Tank)

Dang Fishrod, you're gonna get everyone all misty teary eyed! You're making me want to go give my 120G a hug before I retire for the night:):):). But in all seriousness, I am sure you have fond memories of your former tanks. Most people don't understand the effort it takes to make something so...

Using a power head instead of air for sponge filter..

They say that's why they say Edison financed the Electric chair. To prove that Tesla's AC current was lethal. 120V of either one is not recommended. That being said, very little concern with power cords in the tank. Albeit less concern with power heads than heaters.

Help to choose new stock for my tank please?

Having kept Rainbow fish for quite a long time, I'll tell you what I know. The reason I keep them is that they are colorful, active, not too big, not too small, easy to care for, long lived, but most importantly...........they are peaceful!! In my much younger days I kept all different kinds...

    PH help, desperate

If I didn't have a planted tank, I wouldn't be too concerned about kh & gh. Unless of course, like you, you see big drops in ph. Very low kh can make for unstable ph. In a planted tank, knowing your kh & ph is more useful. There is a calculation to determine CO2 ppm, based on the relationship...

    Equipment for 55 and 170

I'm with you there Bob. I only clean my canisters once every three months. And I'm not sure about the comments above about priming. I guess it depends on what kind of canister you have. I honestly can't remember the last time I primed mine. As to cleaning, I can only speak for my Rena's, but...

    Question about gravel

Another vote for Black Diamond. I just changed over my tank from Pea gravel to Black Diamond, and I am very happy. I purchased at a local Tractor Supply Co. About $8.50 for 50 lbs. Cheap, looks great, and very easy to plant in. FYI I put 5 bags in my 120 gallon.

    Equipment for 55 and 170

I have the Hydor ETH In-Line 300w heaters. They are plumbed into the tubing coming from the canister filter, so they stay outside the tank. I also like that the heated water is pumped into the tank, circulating as it comes in.

    My tank

Is this the same 40 gallon at the beginning of this thread? If so, for some reason it looks a lot bigger than that. I didn't read the whole thread, but looked at a lot of the pictures (although I will read it all in due time), and you are an artist. Some really, really beautiful presentations...

    PH help, desperate

Bob, you know more than me. Is it possible this could be due to low kh? My understanding is that very low kh can lead to ph swings. Since kh serves as a ph buffer, should he check kh and then raise if necessary? Just a thought.

    Equipment for 55 and 170

You’ll hear good and bad about every brand of filter. Most people recommend what they own. Personally I run two Rena XP-3’s and a Rena XP-XL on a 120. The XP-XL also serves as a CO2 reactor. I’ve had the two Rena XP’2 for 9 years. Replaced a couple of gaskets, and other than that they always run...

    GreggZ's Planted Rainbow Tank

Jay that's a good illustration of what I mean. Then funny thing is that even the online calculators and charts don't agree on the CO2 ppm give the same inputs of PH & KH. Between the PH meter and the CO2 flow meter, at least I feel like I have a decent handle on what is going on. Good enough...

    GreggZ's Planted Rainbow Tank

So I’ve been working on dialing in my CO2, relying on the drop checker. Probably is good enough, but I wanted to see if I could get a more precise indication of where I am at. Decided to purchase a CO2 meter. Since this was really kind of a whim, I bought one off of the auction site for about...

    Jay's tank

You are right about that Bob. Both Jay's 120 & 180 threads were what inspired me to finally get a bit more high tech with my plants. Lots of great info in those threads.

    Jay's Planted 180g Tank.

Jay good to see you update the thread. Sounds the EBA and heavily planted tanks may not go together. If it's any consolation, your tank on it's worst day looks better than most any other tank on it's best. I'm sure you'll get it worked out and figure out some new stocking that will be spectacular!

    Nice Tanks....

Bob, why do you do this?;) Weak minded people like me are easily swayed and find it hard to resist temptation. Now you've got my mind running wild with thoughts of a beautiful Discus tank! They really are stunning, and I probably really will keep them at some point. You can not deny the beauty...

    Low tech 75g stocking suggestion

I took a few pictures, I have no clue what kinds of rainbows I have besides the obvious Madagascar. Here's my guess on your Rainbows. Picture 1 & 5....I have no idea. If this color is accurate, I've never seen a young Bow have this much color. Would really be curious to what it actually...

    GreggZ's Planted Rainbow Tank

Thanks again Bob, that’s a very kind thought. I saw you posted it to the AC/FB page. To share some space with those other tanks is quite an honor. I feel like the small fish in the big pond……both figuratively and literally. Those really large tanks are spectacular.
