120 DIY Oak Stand & Canopy Build

The lights are 4ft. They are about 7" above the water, so dispersion looks good and I do not notice any dark spots on the ends. There are not very many bulb choices for 5' lights and they are not readily available, so easy choice for me. I have both T5 normal and T5 HO. The day starts with...

120 DIY Oak Stand & Canopy Build

Well, I couldn't stand it anymore, so I did the tank swap today. It's easy to say, a little harder to do. All in all things went very smoothly. Fish are in the tank, looking good, and eating. Tanks still a little cloudy, but getting clearer each hour. Driftwood is being held down by rocks, so...

Star Rider, I have really, really thought about making this a Discus tank. But my Rainbows are so darn easy to take care of, I don't know if I have the dedication it would take for Discus? Maybe some day......Holey Smokes! I just did a search of Discus and Altum...is that your tank on youtube...

Joel, Thanks for the compliment. I don’t know what a cabinet maker would charge, but I do have a much betterunderstanding on why custom builders are so expensive!

120 DIY Oak Stand & Canopy Build

Thanks for the opinions above. My wife and daughter took a look at it, and they both agree the Oak trim finishes it off nicely. So then my daughter asks me...."So Dad, what are you going to do with your life once we get this aquarium done??". She's a funny one, but it HAS turned into quite an...

120 DIY Oak Stand & Canopy Build

Getting anxious to get the tank up and running. Doors won't be here until probably end of week. In the meantime, I painted the back of the tank black this weekend. Took quite a few coats to get get it fully covered. Am also toying with the idea of trimming out the edge of the glass. The pics...

120 DIY Oak Stand & Canopy Build

You’ve got that right. I went over my plans and made changesmore times than you can imagine. To be honest, it’s a little nerve wracking attimes. By the time I got started, I could see the whole build in mymind…..but I still had the plans there at every step of the way. Even after all the...

120 DIY Oak Stand & Canopy Build

On the first page of this thread is a drawing I put togetherto work off of. It also includes the actual list of lumber that I purchased, not including trim. It could easily be modified for other size tanks. If youwant a higher quality copy, we can work out a way for me to send it to you. At...

120 DIY Oak Stand & Canopy Build

Good question. I don’t really know. Since there is no 2x4 inner construction, it is probably lighter than other DIYstands I have seen. Once I get the doors, I will try to weigh it and reportback.

120 DIY Oak Stand & Canopy Build

Thanks for the nice compliment. I must say, my daughter is pretty excited about the whole project, and is pretty amazed at what we have accomplished so far. This started as a desire to have a little larger tank, and has progressed into something much more. Now have two coats of Poly on, and it...

Another update. Sanded and stained. Seemed like I would never get here. Still waiting on doors. Still need to seal with Poly. Getting closer.......

120 DIY Oak Stand & Canopy Build

The bottom openings will have raised panel oak doors, and the canopy openings will have matching raised panel drawer fronts. I found some flip up hinges, so they will flip up for feeding and day to day easy access. At least that is the plan!

120 DIY Oak Stand & Canopy Build

Thanks for all the kind words. Our woodworking skills are what I would call "developing". I did make a large oak fireplace mantle a few years back, which gave me the courage to attempt this build. Trust me, the internet has been our friend, and we are looking up things and problem solving every...

120 DIY Oak Stand & Canopy Build

Just a quick update. Worked on the trim this weekend. I was going for a clean, simple look. In general, the canopy takes more time and is trickier than the stand. The moving parts take some thinking to get right. Spent a fair amount of time just figuring things out. Next on to sanding...

120 DIY Oak Stand & Canopy Build

I can't wait to see it finished either....however, it's going to take some time. Much like when you see a house quickly framed up...the finish work goes quite a bit slower. I ordered the doors yesterday. Red Oak raised panel with euro hinges. Right now in the process of deciding how I want to...

120 DIY Oak Stand & Canopy Build

Dennis, Yes, the DIY aspect is one I enjoy. Just sitting back and staring at your project when completed is worth all the effort. Plus, you end up with a item that is exactly how you want it. Hopefully that's how this turns out in the end.

120 DIY Oak Stand & Canopy Build

I have been toying with the idea of upgrading my 70 gallon to a larger tank. Thought my Rainbow fish would appreciate a little extra space. Decided on the Marineland 120 XH (60x18x26). Size wise a 6 foot tank wouldn’t work in my space. After spending numerous hours online and looking over...
