I have been toying with the idea of upgrading my 70 gallon to a larger tank. Thought my Rainbow fish would appreciate a little extra space. Decided on the Marineland 120 XH (60x18x26). Size wise a 6 foot tank wouldn’t work in my space.

After spending numerous hours online and looking over countless DIY stand builds, I decided to go ahead and build my own. I would like to thank all those who posted stand builds in the past, as they were an inspiration and full of great tips.

The stand is being built out of oak. No 2x4’s and no visible plywood. The matching canopy needed to have easy day to day access, and I didn’t want to remove it to do water changes or other hand in the tank maintenance.

On Saturday morning it’s off to pick up the wood. I had the1x10’s and 1x12’s cut at the store, and cut all the 1x4 and 1x6 material at home. I made extensive use of the Kreg Pocket Hole Jig and plenty of glue.

Here’s some pics of the first two days of the build. About 12 hours over the weekend. I did have a helper, my 15 year old daughter, who really enjoyed the whole process. Next will be the trim, and then onto sanding, stain, and sealing.

As my skills are limited, I am going to order the doors. By the time I bought the tools I would need to make them properly, it just seemed like an easier way to go.

I can tell you this. I spent far more hours reading online and generating plans than the actual build. I’ll update when I get a bit more done.

Very nice Gregg, well done indeed! I love DIY... for me it's a big part of the hobby.

Dennis,

Yes, the DIY aspect is one I enjoy. Just sitting back and staring at your project when completed is worth all the effort. Plus, you end up with a item that is exactly how you want it. Hopefully that's how this turns out in the end.

Looking great. Little hint may want to cover that hinge in a non toxic lube so it don't rust easy. To tell you the truth the DIY forum tab is the only one I check now days and in deed is the best part of the hobby and saving some cash for more fish. Other thing is you get what you want.

Lookin Good!!

Looks great!

Great looking stand and canopy, well done so far. Looking forward to the progress...I've wanted to try one of those pocket hole jigs for a while, I think I'll try that method for my next project.

Great work - coming along very well - looking forward to updates.

That looks great! It's very much like mine the same size a friend built for me except mine has a set of drawers in the center & no canopy. I wish he'd have had more time before we moved & I had your plans for the top...Can't wait to see it finished!

I can't wait to see it finished either....however, it's going to take some time. Much like when you see a house quickly framed up...the finish work goes quite a bit slower.

I ordered the doors yesterday. Red Oak raised panel with euro hinges. Right now in the process of deciding how I want to trim it. There are endless possibilites. Going to get a few samples today so I can get together a plan.

I am hoping to have it all trimmed out over the weekend....the key word being "hoping".
