How to get crystal clear water?

Stinking bubbles are back in full force today. Pretty sure majority of them are coming from the powerheads. I'm about read to change them out. Might order a couple of the the Eheim Aquaballs with internal filter attachments and see how they work. I'm sick of s**** equipement and thinking I...

How long do shrimp live and do they eat live plants?

I've got two Amano or Glass shrimp (don't know which). Didn't think they would make it, but 6 months later they are still there. I've got 5 clown and 2 Pictus Cats that I was sure would be getting a couple dollar treat or two. In the 125 I loose them for weeks on end, thinking "well they...

How to get crystal clear water?

During my tank maintenance today, I cleaned the impellers and housings for my powerheads and most of the bubbles dissapeared. Don't get it, because the flow was great and hasn't changed. Guess some crud was causing cavitation. Cleaned the Filstar impellar as well as the rest of it. No change...

    freshwater crab

They eat anything and everything. Don't worry about her bothering your fish...very peacful. Do make sure there are no openings at the top of your tank or she will get out. Mine was hanging out on top of my acrylic tank and under the canopy within 4 hours of arrival. I plugged the holes with...

how long are your lights on

I want my light on 12 hours a day for the plants, but to create a subtle dawn/dusk effect (so I don't whack 'em with a full 260w at 7:00am) I turn on half at 7:00am and half at 7:30am, then vice/versa to turn them off at 7:30pm and 8:00pm. So they are on for 13 hrs/day. Also, I run lunar...

How to get crystal clear water?

RTR is there any other reason besides cavitation that could be causing my p/hs to release fine bubbles. My LFS said to make sure that they are completely submersed so that air doesn't get into the case from the top. Did that...no improvement. The flow on them is great. The grates are clean...

How long do shrimp live and do they eat live plants?

ok. So we're sure it's not the shrimp. I just don't think it's the Pleco. I may be wrong, but he's so lazy he doesn't even go for algae. He eats when I feed the other fish. Never seen him eat the plants...but I don't watch him all night either. The Mystery Snail is not an Apple...no...

    freshwater crab

Sorry it took so long, but here's some pics. One has some Platies to show scale. Another has some Angels...this one, the Angel in the foreground is 5" tall and the crab is about 12" away in the background. HTH.

How long do shrimp live and do they eat live plants?

I've got two (amano/glass/?) shrimp that were listed as "Algae Eating" shrimp. They are each about 1 inch long and mostly transparent. Was wondering how long they live and if they are known for eating live plants. My Amazon Sword has been getting chewed on and was wondering who is the...

How to get crystal clear water?

The media I'm running in the XP3 is as follows: Bottom basket: 2 20 micron foams (bottom), 2 30 micron foams (top) Mid basket: 2 carbon pouches Top basket: ceramic bio-media (bottom), 2 white micron foams (top) Maybe I'm not getting enough GPH with all the foam in the bottom? Was...

How to get crystal clear water?

Thanks guys for the input so far. Kas I do a 35% water change per week with a gravel vac. on one portion or other of the tank. I've been cleaning the filter once per week. By the way, I'm not too taken with the Rena Filstar...I think there is blow-by which is contributing to the particulate...

How to get crystal clear water?

My tank is a 125 with the tankmates in my sig. I've shut off my bubble bar and took out the air-diffuser from the power-heads. Seems the power-heads still put out a fine, fine mist of air bubbles - how can this be if they are submerged? Also there is a fair amount of particulate matter...

    Coralife Lunar Aqualight and GFI???

Well, my LFS ordered me another one. Will be in next week. I called Energy Savers today and they verified that it should work with a GFI and they recommend it. Also, I was moving the light to get access to the tank today, and zap! I touched a certain combination of screws on the side and got...

    freshwater crab

I've had one in my tank for about 6 months. He's more scared of the fish than they are of him. I shouldn't say he's scared anymore, however. It took him about two weeks to figure out he wasn't food and now he's everywhere. Take a look at my sig. for tankmates. He is all over the tank and...

    Coralife Lunar Aqualight and GFI???

Thanks for the advice guys. Ran another test on it last night. The unit has two sets of 65w bulbs each with thier own power cord. One trips the GFI and the other does not. I'm going to talk to my LFS about exchanging it this morning....it was a special order hope they take care of me.

    Coralife Lunar Aqualight and GFI???

I've tried two plug-in type GFI's and just for a check I ran an extention cord to the bathroom where there is a wired-in GFI in the wall and it tripped all three. I spoke with an electrician this morning and asked his opinion on Power Compacts and GFIs and he said that it could be something in...

    Coralife Lunar Aqualight and GFI???

I run all the electrical for my aquarium through a GFI outlet (for protection against electrical shock whenever electricity is used near water). I just bought a 48" Coralife Lunar Aqualight with 4 65w Power Compact flourescent bulbs. When plugged into the GFI and turned on, the GFI pops...

    Just ordered Coralife Lunar Aqualight.

Well, after getting a few live plants, finding out I like them better than fake, and watching them slowly die, I've decided to make a go of trying to take care of them better and maybe plant a little more heavily. One step at a time. I just ordered the Coralife Lunar Aqualight - it's 48" with...

    Eheim 2128 Thermofilter questions.

Thanks for letting me know about the power cords. That helps. As far as it being an Eheim, unless they aren't using thermostats to turn the heater on and off I would still be concerned about it sticking in a couple of years and cooking your tank. When you come in to see your tank at 90...

    Eheim 2128 Thermofilter questions.

Thinking about upgrading to the Eheim 2128 with Thermofilter. I was wondering if the heater module is replaceable and if it has it's own power cord that could be disconnected. My experience with heaters is that the thermostats go out and stick after a couple of years. Don't want to have to...
