Are there any Cichlids Suitable for 10 gal?

No, it isn't overstocked if you're willing to keep juveniles in it and trade them in for more juveniles every month. A 10 gallon is to small for even 6 fully grown Brevis. Just because somebody does it and it looks good, that doesn't mean it isn't overstocked and doesn't hold the potential to be...

    cichlids for 55 gallon

Oddball- what's the deal? You know that won't work on about 20 levels, so why would you suggest it? The poster is looking for good info, not jokes.

Are there any Cichlids Suitable for 10 gal?

No yellow labs. That is just an entirely bad idea. These really need to be in at least a 30 gallon, and even then you are really limited in terms of stocking. In terms of their relevance to this thread, #1- again the water parameters are entirely different. #2- a single yellow lab would...

    Help Info on Borellii

another great site for apisto info is apistogramma.com. Some real heavies hang out there and there is a wealth of info. Also, if you can find a copy of Uwe Romer's Mergus Cichlid Atlas Vol.1, you'd be square with almost any question. I went out and picked up a copy as I research for new...

Are there any Cichlids Suitable for 10 gal?

You can't do shellies with the current fish you have. They need exceptionally hard water and are best kept in a species tank. Also, they are very, very sensitive to waste in their water, which livebearer produce a lot of.

How often should i change BIOMAX?

Actually the AC biomax has holes in it, same stuff. Neither has a 'life' like carbon. Biomax is made from some sort of inert ceramic material. Bacteria adhere to the surfaces, but not because the materila posseses some growth agent, it is merely because they are there. It functions in the...

How often should i change BIOMAX?

For the record, it is the same stuff as the AC Biomax.

    LoUd mUsIc

I'd say that while you might not hurt hearing, you definitely might stress them. I know from experience that sound travels under water (snorkelling when speed boats go buy, annoying and alarmingly high pitched). While some fish may not have much in terms of hearing, sound is essentially...

Specific Gravity of Freshwater + Salt

What fish do you have? Some fish welcome salt and actually prefer trace salinity that is not considered brackish (most livebearers, some rainbowfish). Others hate it (cories, otos, soft water cichlids). Before anyone starts throwing around generalizations it's important to gather all the facts.

How often should i change BIOMAX?

If these are similar to/the same as AC Biomax, you should never change them (unless you have EXTREME, re-occuring disease issues). Basically, they function as additional housing for your nitrifying bacteria, removing/changing them could throw off your balance and tee off a mini cycle.

    How many

I agree with mooman. It probably isn't advisable, but if you insist make sure you have lots and lots of plants and a couple of caves for hiding. It might be beneficial to set up hidey holes at opposite ends of the tank. Another thing to consider, and I realize that this isn't on your list...

Are there any Cichlids Suitable for 10 gal?

You won't be able to really keep a pair of any cichlids in a 10g with other fish (if you were willing to get rid of all of your other fish, you could keep a breeding pair of some dwarf cichlids). As things are, you could probably keep a single Ram or maybe a Nannocara Anomola or Dwarf Flag...

    What fish are best..?

Also, you might want to avoid getting a pleco. Common plecos grow far too big for your tank and produce a ton of waste, which will in turn lead to water quality issues which would have a VERY adverse effect on Rams, if that is what you choose. You could go with a bristle nose or rubber lipped...

    picked out fish :)

To add to what Harlock said, if you do choose to go with Otos, you'd probably be better off getting two. Like neons, they function best with company of their own kind. (Since it's been suggested that you nix the gourami, you can squeeze it in there no problem). All that said, too, you might...

    Ammonia Levels During Fishy Cycle

Prime will convert ammonia to ammonium, which is not harmful to your fish. Additionally, it does the same with nitrites. I would strongly suggest you choose this over Ammolock. I definitely don't want you to interpret what I'm saying as using Prime as a replacement for water changes. Just add...

    Ammonia Levels During Fishy Cycle

The stuff I was refering to was Seachem's Prime, which is sort of an all purpose toxin converter that is pretty highly regarded in terms of cycle assisting products. It converts ammonia to ammonium, which is NOT toxic to fish yet is still consumable by nitriying bacteria. Additionally, it...

    Ammonia Levels During Fishy Cycle

Laughs twice *bangs head on desk* This is just basic biology. Organisms reproduce at a faster rate when there is a more readily available food source. By keeping the amount of consumable food at neglible levels, you are limiting the rate at which the cells divide and increasing the rate of...

changing filter cartridges and the effect on bacteria

Bacteria doesn't inhabit your water in great quantities, though it does reside on the surfaces in your aquarium. If your tank has achieved healthy water parameters, I would be really reticent about changing your filter media entirely. Personally, I never change my filter material, I simply rinse...

    Ammonia Levels During Fishy Cycle

Orion Girl, Why then does it take appoximately 10 days to two weeks to cycle a ten gallon tank dosing ammonia at 5 ppm while it takes significantly longer to cycle with fish while trying to keep ammonia at bay?
