Question for people with potting soil/mineralized top soil substrates

Well some of this stuff is common sense, some of it folks get some weird notion.....and then suggest it as a basis for doing it.....and it does not make sense often times, but "sounds good". It might work well.....but not for the reasons claimed. Without looking at all the observed facts and...

Question for people with potting soil/mineralized top soil substrates

Summary: Boiling/baking soil: can use immediately without a drain of O2 levels in the tank or NH4. Messy, stinky, spouse might get angry Nothing: just add soil and add fish 1-2 months later: more water changes required, but no different than ADA AS.......and Amano seems to eek by just...

Question for people with potting soil/mineralized top soil substrates

Heat, burning, boiling etc..oxidizes reduced compounds like soil.......... This is why many plants grow very well after fires. Volcanic rich soils etc........ Boiling oxidizes the Organic N and NH4/NO2 to NO3.......but takes a few minutes vs the abcterial cycle which takes 3-6 weeks or so. Both...

Question for people with potting soil/mineralized top soil substrates

If you do the dry start method, you get pre rooted plants and thick lush cover and the soil is pre mineralized by the time you fill the tank. Kills 4 birds with 1 stone. Regards, Tom Barr

    can crushed coral be planted?

I've used dolomite for decades. No reason why arag or calcite(Seachem Onyx sand.......) do not work. Regards, tom Barr

    Low or high light

Less is always better than more when it comes to lighting. I say it, so does Tropica: http://www.tropica.com/advising/technical-articles/biology-of-aquatic-plants/co2-and-light.aspx

Algae growing on plants = dying plants

This is more about growing plants and very little to do with algae control. A good article: http://www.tropica.com/advising/technical-articles/biology-of-aquatic-plants/co2-and-light.aspx Read this carefully a few times and make sure you fully understand the charts and figures. No one ever...

Injecting more CO2 with the aid of bakeing soda!

You will also want to make sure there is ample surface movement, a good ripple, but not breaking the surface of the water(thus no aeration/bubbles etc). The Adjustment of KH will do virtually nothing. Plants want a CO2 ppm amount, dissolving is not really an issue, it will dissolve just fine...

    Lighting

Stop with the pH stuff, focus instead on KH of the tap water. pH is meaningless, it is indirect and changes with dissolved CO2 content, same with plants, they do not care about a specific pH, it's the CO2 they want. As far as deciding about light and CO2...

    C02 algae question

Algae are fine with CO2 levels in the ppb ranges, 1-2 orders of magnitude less than plants. There's just not much biomass in terms of algae even in highly infested tanks, relative to the plant biomass. Plants are more complex structures/transport systems and need a lot more Carbon to make these...

T.S.P will it work for phosphate? other dry firts i can find at store????

Also, how is calcium phosphate not formed in waters where both dissolved Ca++ and PO4 are present? They clearly are present in my tanks and are at ample concentrations as well as much higher levels in Hoagland's modified hydroponic solution etc. At certain pH and heat, it will form...

    Weaning my plants off c02

If you use excel, you might as well not bother with CO2 gas. You should use less light intensity, then the algae is a non issue.

High NitrAtes with a heavily planted tank??

Did you calibrate the test kit? I have several tanks with different readings. We assume the light is the same, but is it? eg, you measured NO3, but what about light? PAR meter etc? CO2? This one is pretty tough to get confident measure. Light and CO2 will dramatically affect nutrient uptake...

Aeration in a planted tank at night.

Hint for the marine part: Where might there be easy to observe marine life, high plant/macro algae density, fish, inverts etc is a temporarily closed system 2X a day? pH goes from about 8 to 10 or a tad over that sometimes. Shallow FW ponds with thick weed growth, low alkalinity will easily...
