Yes, give the glass a good scrub. It may even be a film of organic material that you can't see, but prevents a good seal.

I have a tank with about 100 rcs at the moment, and leave algae on the sides of the tank. There are usualy some shrimp grazing on the grass, but they never seem to make a dent in the algae. I don't mind, but I haven't found them to be a good solution for removing algae. I suppose they could be...
