Caves, good or bad? And circulation.

Well, A canister is in the offings, but not until after the first of the year. I told my GF I was putting a moritorium on fish stuff spending until after ths holidays. ;) I'm thinking one of the Ehiem Pro series, with the integrated heater and all that. I was speaking more as in...

    Friend just 'Tops Off'tank...

Well, not as much in defense of him, but as to pose a countering stand. If you run a planted tank many of the thigns you're removing in a water change (primarily nitrogen bearing compounds) are eventually consumed by the plants. I have had heavily planted tanks that I simply topped off...

Is your CO2 on all night?

I have good buffering in my water here, at least I think 5kh is good, and leave my c02 on 24/7. I see a slight morning versus evening PH fluctuation but nothing that seems to be bothering my fish in the least.

    Snails for algea...

I've had good luck with what are called "columbian ramshorn" snails. They are like the common ramshorns, but larger.

    Making a Cave for Fish

I have done this in a couple of my tanks. I use the disposable gladware type containers they sell now. Turn one upside down, cut an opening in one side. set this on the substrate (you can use the sandwhich ones for a cave about 2-3 inches tall for instance) then place flat slate or...

    Crazy Yellow Gourami

Then the next question would be how much still water surface do you have? And has the male started any nesting? If so he is might be courting the female.

Building a shell for a stand.

I have recently acquired and set up a 100g tank in my front living room. I love it, but the stand is of the generic looking stained pine variety, and it doesnt match up well with the rest of the room. I was considering building a three sided "shell" to wrap around this stand and match up...

    Heater problems.

I have had a rash of heather problems lately. Mostly ebo-jagers but a few others. Here is the problem. They stick in the ON position. I come home and have a 90+ degree tank. It has already happened once in a tank of mine and ravaged the plant life. Does anybody ever actually fix...

    Kuhlie loach conditions

I can also vouch for the effectiveness of the MTS. Some people consider them a nusiance, but I consider them a godsend. They till up any substrate, and when the lights are off they tend to come up and help out with algae on the glass. Not to mention they don't eat plants. If you don't...

Caves, good or bad? And circulation.

I recently set up a 100g tank which will end up being heavily planted and co2 injected. When setting it up I used a row of stones along the middle with more substrate behind and less in front to create a tiered effect. I thought it would be good to make a few caves under the back tier for...

    Crazy Yellow Gourami

Is the first one a boy or a girl? That can make a difference, gourami sometimes show somewhat agressive behavior around each other when it comes to mating, this INCLUDES the male and female courting.

    sand subtrate

From my experience : Avoid stirring the substrate, just vaccuum across the surface. and put a sponge over the intake for the filter and that should help cut down on sand sucked up and in.

    Help! Gourami spawned!

Of my last spawning of blue gourami I have 6 left out of a large spawning. This is mostly because I had a heater go out in the tank that they were growing out in. A testament to keeping a consistent and warm temp for them. I have had tons of heater problems lately, the heater fairy is...

    bristlenose problem???

Ok, I am also on the Zuchinni train here. (wow, that could be taken the wrong way...) I boil mine for a couple minutes, then rubber band it to a rock and drop it to the bottom. One zuchinni squash will make enough for me to drop a piece in all three of my tanks with pleco's in them and...

    Kuhlie loach conditions

I have kept them in both, and they seem to do fine in both. The natrual environment for this type of fish I believe is sandier substrates.

    Help! Gourami spawned!

My best two plants to use for this have been foxtail and java moss. The foxtail will go bottom to top of the tank and the stuff I have grows in almost any water. JAva Moss it good for dense coverage around the bottom.

    Help! Gourami spawned!

From my experience with blue Gourami, You may have from 20-200 fry in a decent spawning. You can either seperate them out into a seperate tank (see above tips for speed cycling), or move all the other occupants. Or of course you could just leave them to thier own devices to survive...

    Bristlenose gender specifications.

OK, That one in that pic is pretty much a dead ringer for mine. Same sparse but existant bristles.

    what plants for a beginner?

Well, the one glaring difference between the tank you have there and the 20 tall next to my desk here is PH, my PH is about 7.0 and you're a shade higher. One plant i've had sucess in about every environment i've thrown it in (literally ones I threw some clippings out and they ended up...

    Sand and Plecos...

Do plecos do well with sand substrate? I have a large tank I'm getting ready to redo the substrate in and sand has been an option I'm debating. I have a common plec, a rubber nose, and a bristle nose currently and one or more of them could end up in there if it suits them well. I'm...
