brown algae taking over....what do i do

I had a similar problem with my big tank- the diatoms flourished for nearly a month before the population slacked off. Just be patient, and keep up with your water changes. Vac out the algae frequently, so that the silicates in the dead cells won't be recycled.

Topic of light bulbs again, sorry

Is it the bulb that came with the Eclipse? If so, I believe it is a 5500 K bulb.

    Marine Minnow/Topminnow?

It's definitely a topminnow (Fundulus species); I don't know the coastal species, so I can't help you there. Here's a key to FL Gulf Coast species: http://academic.regis.edu/mghedott/imagePDF/FUNDULIDAE-Wiley-Ghedotti.pdf

Stocking a new 100 gallon tank ideas?

Jaygnar- You are in the heart of the greatest area of freshwater fish diversity in the temperate world. The Savannah has a great diversity of fishes, and the nearby Tennessee and Coosa drainages are even more absurdly diverse, comparable on a species/drainage area basis to the Amazon and...

Topic of light bulbs again, sorry

Look for the color temperature on the bulb; this is expressed in Kelvins (K). Bulbs with a color temp below 5000 K will look yellow; those above 10,000 K will look blue. There is not a direct correlation between color temp and amount of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) available to...

Stocking a new 100 gallon tank ideas?

Are you in the US? If so, consider centrarchids such as Lepomis sunfish and Ambloplites basses. These guys are similar to cichlids in size, personality, and appearance, are readily available in the US, and are different from what most fishkeepers have. Here are some examples: Longear...

    ACF tank size, breeding ect.

A 30 breeder would work just fine for one or two pairs of frogs. From what I am told, getting them to breed is not hard (they will do it on their own if kept healthy and happy) but raising the tads is quite difficult. Of course, if you want to hasten things, you could expose the female to the...

    Pellets or Flakes?

I also use both, but in your particular case I think I would mainly use pellets for the cat and shark and sinking wafers and pellets for the ghost shrimp. In my opinion flakes are best for smaller midwater and topwater feeders, such as livebearers, tetras, and minnows. More substantial fish...

10 gallon tank with a crack from top to bottom, repairable?

The great thing about those old tanks is that it's pretty easy to pull out the old glass and replace it. The overlapping seams are much easier to undo and redo than the tight seams on an all-glass tank. Try cutting the cracked piece free; if that proves intractable, you may be able to use a...

Another Thread Asking for stocking advice

Ropefish are predatory, but I doubt they will harm your fish- the barbs and cichlid are too big, the danios too active. When I had one I fed him sinking shrimp pellets, frozen bloodworms, and live shrimp.

    Duetto Filter

Yes you can. Charcoal keeps the water a little bit clearer, and can remove some toxins from the water. But, if you are treating your tap water with a good dechlorinator such as Prime, most toxins will be neutralized already. A Duetto is a small filter in any case; I prefer to add extra foam...

    Duetto Filter

The charcoal should be changed once a month at least. I don't use charcoal unless there is a specific reason to do so (need to remove medications, water is stained with tannins, etc.). The sponge can be rinsed and re-used until it is too ragged to hold together. Just rinse it in the old tank...

Danios and barbs like company. I would get more of each those, to bump the groups up to 5 or 6 at the least. After that, maybe some nice bottom-dwelling catfish. What are your temp and hardness like?

    Freshwater Gamefish

Ken- Rerelease of fish is illegal in all states. Camber- The other posters are right that a 90 gallon is far too small for a black bass. However, there are many smaller centrarchids with basslike behavior, such as rock bass, warmouth, and green sunfish. You could keep a small group of these...

Any know about the sleeper goby?

True sleeper gobies (Valenciennea sp.) are small brightly colored marine species. If this fish was in the freshwater section, it might have been the much larger euryhaline fat sleeper, Dormitator maculatus.
