Pellets or Flakes?

I think that its more of a preference and each fish have there own likes and dislike
It is always a better to use both and even frozen foods so that your fish dont get sick of eating the same stuff everyday :)

Home made foods are also something to try out

Imagine I eat roasted chicken for life everyday LOL

I use Hikari micro pellets and Nutrifin Max flakes. All the fish love the pellets but bottom dwellers don't get much. The Nutrifin flakes are good because they are more likely to be found by the catfish and are easily crushed down as fine as desired. Alternating the two provides a bit more variety in diet.
I also include frozen and sometimes live foods for more variety and to keep them happy.

I use regular flake, spirulina flake, veggie wafers, shrimp pellets, cichlid pellets, supplemented with frozen foods and fresh veggies...a good variety depending on the tank.

So in general it would be safe to say that all of us don't just use flakes or pellets but we give our fish a variety :)

it is advisable to feed fry, fry food but crushed flakes are fine in a powder form for babies due to there small mouths

I was in the anti-flake club for a while, but flakes are just more practical for some fish. Pellets may retain nutrients longer, but many are exceedingly difficult for small fish to eat until they get a bit waterlogged anyway. Additionally, if food is sitting in water for so long that nutrient leach is an issue, you're probably feeding too much anyway. Though the vast majority of my fish still get pellets, frozen, or home made foods, almost all of my livebearers have high quality flakes and crumbles as the staple of their diets. Again, variety is a key component in ensuring that your fish get as much as possible out of your feeding regimen.

tell you what.. there are some foods (like New Life Spectrum) that i see raved about so often and almost religiously by some, yet honestly, while there are differences in quality, i don't think any one brand of fish food is the means to an end. give your fish some variety. switch up the brands on occasion. :) to call a single brand "the best under any and all circumstances" would be foolish.

you all seem to be on the right track with the variety of fish food. :)

I also use both, but in your particular case I think I would mainly use pellets for the cat and shark and sinking wafers and pellets for the ghost shrimp. In my opinion flakes are best for smaller midwater and topwater feeders, such as livebearers, tetras, and minnows. More substantial fish such as yours have to spend a lot of time and eat a lot of flakes to get the same amount of food they would get from a single pellet.

I feed my Neons and smaller fish crushed up flakes so that they can fit in their mouths, my Kuhlis bottom feeder tablets and whatever food they find, my otos and shrimp algea wafers and my Dwarf Gourami gets live bloodworms along with my ADFs.

I prefer both for varying reasons, though I am of the opinion that flakes are superior nutritionally since they require less in the way of fillers and terrestrial plant proteins to keep their form. Pellets need more binder to hold that shape.

Pellets are cleaner since the fish generally eat them whole. Flakes break apart as the fish eat, leaving tiny amounts to float around and make detritus.
