    Evaporation stress?

I lost the first stalk today... I think the rest will be following soon. The bases are still somewhat attached on the remaining corals, so I'll give them today to start looking better, then I'll be yanking them all. Ugh.. So depressing!:cry::cry::cry::cry:

    Evaporation stress?

Yeah, I was running two smaller and one large heater to help during winter.. Northern NY gets cold when you're 15 minutes from Canada.. My luck being what it is, the largest heater stuck... The two were off, but the one has been slowly raising the temp over the last two days. Actually, if my...

    Evaporation stress?

I think I found the culprit.. One of my heaters is stuck in the "on" position. I have the tank temp down to 86.6, and the heater still turns on when plugged in. I hope my leathers recover. They look pretty rough..

    Evaporation stress?

I shut off the lights and unplugged two heaters to give the tank some cooling time.. I assumed the temp spiked because of the heat we've been having. Maybe the auto top off is just a coincidence?

    Evaporation stress?

I was wondering if I could get some suggestions.. My auto top off system crapped out a few days ago, and I've been reduced to manual top off after two years. (Bummer; I know!) Here's my dilemma.. The tank temp is sitting at 89 degrees, which shouldn't be an issue, but I think the return to...

My mother's new tank.. Any ideas what this is?

She had an ammonia spike last week, and all levels are 0 now.. (ammonia, nitrates, nitrites) I know that it can be deceiving, since the algae lives off the buildup. She has nothing in the tank other than rock at the moment, so there are no feedings going on. She used a shrimp for cycling, FYI..

My mother's new tank.. Any ideas what this is?

My mother just cycled her 14 gallon biocube, and is very excited about the new life popping up. She sent me a picture of "something" in her tank, but I'm at a loss... She says it's purple, and has "strands" coming off of it.. but now they're gone. I'll try to get better pictures this...

Adding a carnivore throwing off chemistry?

That looks like it, then.. dinoflagellates! How do I destroy it? That's a new one for me!! I had the lighting off for the day, and now it's on an 8 hour schedule. I'll monitor it as things progress..

    Bristle Worm

I recently watched my cranky old damsel eat two bristle worms I knocked off some rock.. It looked incredibly painful, as he grabbed it, spit it out, grabbed it and shook, and repeated about three times before choking it down. Unfortunately the damsel lived, but it was fun to watch! :P

Adding a carnivore throwing off chemistry?

Well, here's an update one month later: I have some really persistent cyano, by the looks of things.. Crud floating on top of the water, lifted to the surface by oxygen bubbles, and mostly growth on the rocks. It's getting to the point where I think it's actually causing harm. My beautiful...

    Built in overflow question

Drill the stand.. I had a HOB for a while, and I prefer the built in overflow I have now. It's cleaner, quiet, easier to maintain and safer (If set up properly)

    Begginer salt ?

The hardest part of moving with a tank is minimizing the time your livestock spends out of a tank. I moved last year, and had to move a 90 gallon tank. Luckily, it was not that far of a move, and I set up a 55 at the new house to store most of the animals in while the move went on. Even with...

Adding a carnivore throwing off chemistry?

My crappy skimmer has been rehired, as well.. If it starts pulling nastiness out, I'll look at running it full time again. Before increasing my population, it just wasn't needed with the coral in the tank

Sabae Anemone won't take hold with his foot?!

How long has it been in the tank? I know mine took a few days to adjust, and mine was also receiving "rough love" from my clarkii.. It attached after a day or two, and then moved where it wanted to be within two weeks.. Is it shrinking any? Have you seen the clarkii nibbling on it? If I...

Adding a carnivore throwing off chemistry?

Yeah, I plan on upping my cleanup numbers to help with the bloom. I also added a sponge filter to my sump as a temporary means of mechanical filtration, catching the stuff I blew loose. It's helped quite a bit with the "floaters" I can blow off. I don't feed him every day. He gets one meal...

Adding a carnivore throwing off chemistry?

So, I added a lionfish to my tank about two weeks ago, and I was wondering if my theory holds true: I recently had what appears to be an algae bloom.. A little hair algae, and diatom as well. I have a light bioload (before the lion, 5 fish in 90 gallons), so would it stand to assume the bloom...

How long to wait til feeding goes live?

Update: Lionfish is eating well.. He even has learned who the "bringer of the food" is! While usually lazing around the tank in his favorite perches, he gets all excited when I come to the tank. I have to fight the urge to overfeed him, though. Even if he does suck in his cheeks and make...

I say keep him. Then buy something that will eat him! Did I say that out loud? My bad! XD
