    Compact internal filter

You're right on about cartridge based internal filters having to sit above the water level. That's another reason (besides the size) I decided against them, although in my case we keep the water level a bit low as the ADFs need to come to surface for air..... I do like the AT10. The price...

    Compact internal filter

Which filter is at 160 gph you are referring to? Agreed that would be a bit too much. The Aqueon filter I referred to in original post is not one of their stand alone variety.... I do like those (and I do have one Aqueon QF30 on our 25 gal), but this one is attached to the tank (Aqueon mini...

    Compact internal filter

@Jayhawk... Thanks for the good info. I did consider TOM also, but it's size is similar (from what I've read) to that of Tetra Whisper i10 or Marina I25, both of which I think would take up a lot of tank space..... I am leaning towards the AquaTop IF201.... Hope that works..... It's cheap...

    Compact internal filter

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't consider air driven ones, thinking they might not be quiet enough. The tank is in my daughter's bedroom.... Is the Penn Plax one quiet enough?

    Compact internal filter

I am looking for a compact internal filter for my daughter's 5 gal tank in which she keeps her pet ADFs (2). The tank is an Aqueon 5.0 kit and the filter it comes with is a joke. I added a Marina S10 HOB to it, but it prevents from the hood being closed and there's large gap in the back. We...

    peppered cory disappeared in QT

I had 6 peppered cories and QTed them in 5 gal tub. After about 4-5 days one of them was missing. I thought may he was hiding somewhere. Today after about 2 wks in QT I put the 5 remaining in the main tank. I looked and looked all over the QT tank. No sign of the 6th guy!!! Not even bones??!! I...

    sick honey gourami - help

He died sometime that night after I moved him to QT :( I felt terrible about it. I could have avoided, if I added another one to the tank, to spread out the aggression, if that was the cause...... Thanks.

    sick honey gourami - help

One of 2 honey gouramis in my 25 gal planted sick has fallen ill all of a sudden. He was fine yesterday and this morning I found him lying in the gravel. I immediately out him in a QT. He's swimming OK, but he's 2 whitish spots (pics attached). I have added some salt in the QT. All other...

    New guy from Northern Michigan

Hi Bill, Welcome to the forum :) Good luck with setting up the 55 gal. It should be fun and keep us updated, with pics if possible. Great to be retired at 58, eh?! I am jealous :)

    Petsmart fish sale

That's strange. Thought it would be nation-wide..... I bought 10 cardinals over 2 wks ago a day after the recent $1 sale started. I figured that way I know they had been there in the store for a while and must be healthy (as long as the tanks maintained OK, which seems to be case in the store...

    jungle val not doing well...

Yes, I see it. I was expecting a little something like this may be not quite so overwhelming. I ran GH and KH tests a couple of days ago. Both came out at 50-70 ppm. Well on the low side. I like it for my cardinals etc, but plants do better with some hardness.. May be I shall start with low...

    cardinals in QT

I have got 10 cardinals in my 5 gal QT for about 2 wks now. I do not want to add them all to main tank (25 gal moderately planted) at the same time. I would like add in batches. Any advice how many at a time and how space the batches time wise? Thanks.

    jungle val not doing well...

It's mostly old leaves if not all. Also, I had trimmed a lot of yellow leaves very early on.... Will have to try some crushed coral in the canister.. Where can I get them, cheap?! Although, I'd like to keep my pH on the acidic side as it is now (~6.5). Thanks.

    jungle val not doing well...

Ok I took the vals out yesterday, trimmed the decayed and dying leaves and a bit of the roots as well. The root looked good, BTW. So replanted them making sure they are not buried deep. I shall hold off on the Excel. I know my tap water is on the softer side, but I don't want to do anything...

    what plant is this?

Thanks. My guess the java moss hitchhiked with my java fern, which I bought about 4 months ago. I see some more of the java moss near the roots of the java fern!

    what plant is this?

Sorry for the bad quality of the picture. This plant just showed up in my tank few wks ago. Just let it grow to see how it comes out. Is this some kind of algae? Thanks. PS: Sorry, I did load the image, but not showing here??!!
