Do I NEED to have sand??

I recently moved my malawis to a tank with sand, and they're having a great time excavating. The "landscape" is constantly changing.

    Electric Blue ... or not???

Last year I bought a very small juvenile that the seller told me was an electric blue hap. In the pictures of the electric blues I see online, the dorsal fin is rather plain. On my mature fish the fin is edged in orange, with additional yellow markings. Does an electric blue have these marks...

Why is the Bala a "shark"??

Okay, thanks for the replies. You've verified what I suspected, but I wanted to make sure since I knew friends would ask. Yes, I have a big tank. By the way, I'm a former resident of Gainesville, FL too.

Why is the Bala a "shark"??

I guess this is a question for the ichthyologists out there. I want to get some Bala sharks, but why are they called sharks? Just because they look a lot like sharks, or because there is something that classifies them in the "shark" family? The only true sharks I know are marine and have...

    Safety of canister filters????

I've just ordered a Fluval 404, and it's the first time I've used a filter other than a hang-on. I must admit I'm a little nervous about all those hoses outside the tank -- like what if a hose comes loose and pumps 75 gallons of water into the room. Has anyone had any problems like this? Any...

    Oscar with holes in fin??

A couple of weeks ago I noticed a couple of pin-sized holes in my Oscar's fins. Now they're getting bigger. Is this "fin rot"? If so, how do I treat it? (All water parameters are good.) If treatment works, will the holes eventually heal up and disappear? Thanks!!

Couple of more oscar diet questions

Would it be safe to feed my oscar some canned tuna or salmon that's packed in water? And what about house flies after I swat them? Are there any insects I should avoid feeding him? Anything else I should avoid (I'm not using feeder fish)? Thanks!!

Hagen or AP Nitrate Test Kits?

Dry Tab, etc. I'd agree with caffeine -- I find it hard to tell the colors on the AP kit over 20. Is the Hagen any better? I've looked at the color chart on the Red Sea kit and it looks a bit better. And has anyone tried the Dry Tab dip strips for nitrate?

    crawfish ???

I have a coldwater tank with a pair of shubunkins. Would adding a few crawfish work?

    Need fluorescent tube advice

I currently have GE Chroma 50 tubes on one of my tanks, but the 5000K looks too yellow for my taste. My Wal*Mart store also has GE Ultra and GE Plant & Aquarium tubes. Does anyone know the Kelvin rating on those two? Can anyone using them describe their appearance? Thanks!!

what else can I put with goldfish?

I have two shubunkins in a 75 gallon tank, and with them I have 10 small white cloud mountain minnows, which are also "cold water" fish.

    Shubunkin size?

I have two shubunkins in a 75 gallon tank. How large can I expect them to get? I read that in a pond they can get to 14 inches. Does that include the tail?

Minimum water temperature for a pleco?

Actually, I got the pleco for the shubunkin tank after someone here at this forum recommended it as a good algae eater for a coldwater tank. My old copy of Innes says they are fine down to 62 degrees, but my tank is right around that now, and I'm wondering how critical that is. If anyone else...

Minimum water temperature for a pleco?

I've got a common pleco in my unheated shubunkin tank, and the water has been getting rather cool this year. How cool can a pleco stand it?

algae in a 172g koi tank

Yes, the ultra daylights are 6500K. And my algae was also so bad that the Magnum 350 polisher couldn't keep up with it.

What is your favourite type of goldfish?

    Another vote for shubunkins.

Who puts live plants in their goldfish tanks?

I have a 75 gallon tank with two 8-inch shubunkins, and when my lfs had a sale on Amazon swords I bought a couple. I figured they'd be gone in no time, but three months later they're still about the same size, having replaced chewed leaves with new growth. Didn't expect to have any success...

algae in a 172g koi tank

After my 75 gallon shubunkin tank got to be about 14 months old it developed the green soupy water. I tried Phos Zorb to lower phosphates, but even the micron filter on my HOT magnum couldn't keep it clear. Then I tried replacing the old fluorescent tubes, since older tubes shift to a...
