    Filter Media Never Really "Dirty"...Problem?

Two filters, rigorous water change and cleaning schedule, stocking is reasonable...I think you're just a good fish keeper.

    A little nerite eye candy

Took this a while back. I have four in a 29 gallon tank. I've had them just over four years. They are fabulous tank cleaners!

    Fishfriend's 20 Gallon "Quiet" Tank

Nice set-up. I have one tank these days, and it's an understocked, quiet one, too. The less-demanding maintenance schedule suits my lifestyle.

Fungus to Ich? or Is this just fungus... I can't tell.

You don't need the heater. The goldfish is fine at room temp, 60s-70s degrees F.

    vacation feeding blocks

Hmmm...fish sitting...could be a lucrative side business! The service could be free, depending on what your TV is worth on the local used market! Anyhoo, I don't feed for absences less than two weeks. For longer, I have the neighbor who checks the cats give a shake or two a few times.

thoughts on glofish... Just want to hear your opinions

I bought a batch years back. I didn't really have a problem with them morally or aesthetically. However, they lived about half as long as the batch of plain old zebra danios I had. I think of them like neon tetras...pretty, but I'd rather have fish that last longer, thank you very much.

Ever have an Emperor Biowheel pump just wear out?

Problem solved Problem solved! Glabe, you were on to it. I noticed that the impeller was not spinning as freely as it could. I ordered a new impeller assembly for $15 off Amazon, and everything is good as new. The little rubber bushing thing had hardened or worn out and was not allowing the...

Ever have an Emperor Biowheel pump just wear out?

Thanks for the responses. I have cleaned everything I can. The flow is still weak, but is hanging in there. I happen to have a UGF on this tank, too, and it's understocked. I'm not in immediate danger if it fails so I'll observe it for a while.

Ever have an Emperor Biowheel pump just wear out?

I've got an Emperor 280 Biowheel. Of late the flow seems to have diminished. And it's become prone to the gurgles you otherwise only get when it needs primed. I've cleaned everything out and inspected the impeller. Everything seems in order. It's just loosing steam. Do these things wear out on...

Question about dead cypress wood used in aquarium.

I bought some driftwood already weighted; it was screwed to 1/4" slate square with a stainless steel screw (with a hole drilled through the slate). The slate is flat, and easily hides under the substrate with the substrate helping to weight it. If you use a flat stone of some kind that's not too...

    GloFish... Unethical or awesome???

I tried a batch of glofish, but they turned out to be not very hardy. They were significantly outlived by the normal zebra danios. I would not purchase them again. However, they were colorful, active fish. I did not have a problem with the genetic manipulation. Nature experiments with new...

Odd growth on a GlowLight Tetra

Does it appear to be getting any larger over time?

    Holy Algae, Batman!

I had a bloom of the stuff when I increased lighting in my tank. I did a significant water change then I turned off the lights for a few days, and that seemed to give the snails a chance to get ahead of it. After that, I reduced the time I had the lights on by an hour, and it's not reappeared in...

    Cycling question

If you have media with bacteria, you already have a cycled tank, albeit one that can't accommodate many fish. You could skip to adding your new fish gradually over several weeks. Just a thought.

    Gravel siphon?

The Python-style ones that you hook up to a faucet come with a valve near the end of the siphon end that makes it easier to control the initial force.

    SNAILS OH MY!!!!

Fun post. Thanks for the pics. Anything special to keep them all fed as they grow? Is the glass biofilm enough?

What to put in my 10 gallon tank?

Not many. Ten gallons is not much space. Personally, I'd pick the barbs. They grow to 2"+, so you're only looking at 3-4 with the dwarf gourami. And don't add more than 1 or 2 at time, to avoid overwhelming the cycle. This is assuming the tank is already cycled.

    Medic Tank Advice First Post

Second on the filter pad. I keep a second, smaller filter pad in the reservoir in my hang-on-back filter all the time (it's for a smaller HOB, so it does not interfere with water flow in the bigger HOB). I keep the Qt tank empty and dry until needed. Problem with keeping any fish resident in...

    Topping off?

FWIW, if using a typical eyedropper, there are about 20 drops per milliliter. Might be a little different for a thicker fluid like dechlorinator, but still pretty close. I know it's not harmful to put in extra within reason, but I don't like to overdo additives, so when I was topping off my 5g...

What to look for in a Betta?

I'm considering taking on a Betta. I have a 5 gallon tank to dedicate for it. But they always looks so miserable in their little cups at the LFS. What should I look for to be sure I'm getting a healthy betta?
