    Best Filter

What is the best HOB filter for a 35 gallon hex tank? TIA

    Activated carbon

I use an AquaClear filter in my tank. It comes with a sponge, activated carbon, and something that looks like white pellets (I can’t recall their name). I know not to change the sponge because that’s where the bacteria is, but what about the carbon? I think the box says to change it monthly...

    What am I doing wrong?

I have a 35 gallon hex tank, well established, regular water changes. Testing parameters are in normal ranges according to my testing kit. I currently have 2 tetras in there. When I add new fish (never more than 4 at a time), I always lose at least 50% of them within 1 week. What am I doing...

    Two quick questions?

Question 1: I have a 35 gallon hexagon tank. There are 5 Tuxedo (?) Tetras in it. I'd like to add a bigger fish. Suggestions for peaceful fish in a tall tank? Question 2: I do not have any background paper on the tank, and it's kind of boring. With a hexagonal shape, would you put...

Brown algae, what to do about it?

Plecos get very large. This is a tall tank, and it wouldn't accommodate one. I was thinking there is a fish called Ottos or otocinclus(?) that eats algae??

Brown algae, what to do about it?

Maybe slightly pink? This tank had been up for 6 years, artificial gravel, I don't keep the light on that much at all-minimal actually. It is not planted and the nitrate reading is 15.

Brown algae, what to do about it?

I have light brown algae (furry like) growing on the tank decor. It grows even with proper a vacuuming and water changes. What do you do about it?

    Changing filters

Thanks for your input, Pisces2014, and welcome to the forum. It has been running alongside the Magnum for 6 days now. I was able to fit it without too much trouble. I plan to vacume the gravel and do a water change this evening. I will probably take the Magnum out tomorrow or Sunday.

    Changing filters

It is also a hexagonal tank, so there is a small cutout in the hood that won't accommodate just any filter. It's not that I'm dissatisfied with the HOT Magnum, just intimidated by it because it was a bit challenging to put together in the first place.

    Changing filters

It's a 35 gallon tank. The new filter is an Aqua Clear.

    Changing filters

Thanks for the replies. Was going to take Rbishop's advice, but when I got the new filter out of the box, I realized it will not fit on the back of the tank anyway. The cutout on the hood is too narrow. I have a H.O.T. Magnum Cannister on it now, and quite frankly, I've been intimated by it...

    Changing filters

I am putting a new filter on a well established tank. Is it necessary to put the sponge in the tank for a couple of weeks beforehand to grow bacteria on it or can I just change the filter outright?

    Water change question

Thanks, Byron. I think I will increase the Corys by 3 for sure. And since my last post, I lost a harlequin rasbora so I will add more of them as well. It's been a nice combination; they seem active and healthy.

    Thank you!

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to those who have helped answer my questions on fish less cycling, stocking, and water changes. I did my first water change last night since stocking my tank, and the fish are so active this morning. I'm excited that they appear to be healthy. I...

    Water change question

I thought about an Angel, FreshyFresh, but those Rasboras are so small, I think an Angel would eat them. I'm pretty sure the Rasboras don't get much bigger. The Gourami's should not grow to be over 2 inches. I do love an Angel fish, though.

    Can't read API, need different

I don't have anything to add, except that I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's hard for me differentiate between some of the shades. Also, I never know if I should hold the tube of water right up against the paper card or slightly in front of it. It DOES change the shade!

Right, now its my turn!! Advise pls on my new tank...

    Water change question

I have finished cycling my tank and stocked it over 2 days, finishing Tuesday. I have a 35 gal hex tank with 2 sunset honey gouramis, 5 harlequin rasboras, and 3 peppered corydoras. I plan to do weekly water changes/gravel vacuuming. Since it is a newly stocked tank, would I change the water...

    Fishless cycle question

It is a 35 gallon Hex, and the tentative plan is either: honey gourami, harlequin rasboras, cory cats or angelfish, bloodfin tetras, marble hatchetfish, kuhli loaches. The choices are limited at my lfs :(
