    What's the best algea eater?

IME the best algae eaters in fresh water are plecostimus (I have common and pitbull varities), and common goldfish. The only problems with large plecostimus and carp is that they are prone to nibble if not downright eat your aquatic plants, and they do get VERY large.

    Catching fish

Generally with larger, slow moving fish I use my hands to catch them (clean skin is far less abrasive than a net), but for small fish about the only option is a net. If you do use your hands to catch fish watch out for spiny fish and fish with big teeth... Even the nonpoisonous ones hurt!

    bug bomb?

Not that long ago our cats got fleas, and we didn't want to bomb for that same reason. We gave the cats Frontline for three months and it killed all the fleas. If this infestation is due to the presense of a cat or dog that is what I would HIGHLY recommend,

    Slow leak in PVC joints

Proper PVC pipe dope or cement causes the plastic to literally melt together. It only works on true polyvinal chloride (PVC). Are you certain your flex pipes are PVC? Also I tend to agree the JB weld will work, but redoing the plumbing is a better option.

Does anyone make a powerhead that DOES NOT blow bubbles?

Because of the way an impellar works it is doubtful that you are getting cavitation unless you have an ENORMOUS quantity of dissolved gas. Cavitation takes place in the low pressure zone behind a propellar blade at high RPMs. An impellar flings water rather than pushing it, and few household...

    Snails "commiting suiside"?

Snails are too stupid to know the difference. The ones that get sucked up are reduced to fish food pretty much instantly. but if you want to keep your snails you will need to add some sort of strainer to the intake.

Does anyone make a powerhead that DOES NOT blow bubbles?

I have that same powerhead, and an old version of the 801 (I think it is anyways, it looks identical). Neither cavitates in FW or SW in my experiance.

    Anyone with a 'Freshwater Aqualight'?

I have a 4x65 watt Sattelite on my new marine setup, the fan is not terribly louder than your average computer fan. The Sattelite is a great deal for the price. And just so you know the SmartPaq Dual Daylight is 1/2 6,500K; 1/2 10,000K. 10,000K is perfectly acceptable for planted tanks, but...

    goldfish - cold water only?

This is kind of on topic so I will just post it here instead of in a new thread... I just got three common goldfish because I missed the ones I gave away before. Right now they are in an overgrown five gallon tank with a shiner (I know this is too small, it is just pending future...

    5 gal setup...

My only recommendation is that if they are available get Amano shrimp instead of ghost shrimp. They live much longer and do a better job of cleaning.

To UGF or not to UGF...

When I referred to everything I meant my live rock and corals. I know that detrius sinking is a good thing.

    Curiousity questions about lighting...

Good link. With that info and the link to Premium Aquatics I could build a 70 or 175 watt fixture (I just plain don't need 250 watts since I plan to use this in combination with my 4x65 watt Power Compact). I could probaly put a single lamp near the center of the tank this way and still get a...

    Angelfish dying...

Before I even start I will admit that I was lax in my tank maintainence which I am sure didn't help any with my problems. A few months ago I'd posted about the possibility of a neon tetra disease outbreak in my tank, then suddenly quit posting. That was because my royal plecostimus had died...

    Sand in New Tank

I found that the easiest and best way to wash out the sand is to fill a bucket with it and take it outside, and get a garden hose. Turn on the hose and push it all the way to the bottom of the bucket so the sand fluidizes (it'll look like a sand storm in the bucket). Move the hose all around...

    Bamboo Shrimp

I have three wood shrimp in a 10 gallon shrimp-only planted tank and IMO they are one of the most interesting shrimps of all, SW included. Mine pick bits of food out from the substrate and off of the plants and decorations (two pieces of artificial driftwood, added because it provides hiding...

    Curiousity questions about lighting...

Thanks for your info. And yes I was looking for a way to build a cheapo halide fixture or equivelant. Not to mention that I want to keep the total system wattage below 500 watts (that's input power, not effective throughput). As to the question about the ballasts (question 4) I wanted to know...

    Curiousity questions about lighting...

I have a few questions of mostly academic interest about some high powered lighting systems. 1: Why can't you use standard 175 watt mercury vapor lamps in concert with compact flourescent lamps for reef lighting? I was just wondering because they cost about $25 for a ballast and bulb, and...

To UGF or not to UGF...

IMO UGFs are still handy, I was asking if it was best to remove mine (which I did) because I am still used to fw fish, where anerobic is almost a dirty word. I am keeping my crushed coral (IMO sand is nothing but a pain, it fluidizes at the slightest provocation and everything sinks in it), and...

To UGF or not to UGF...

I had asked this question in another topic on the General Marine forum and never got an answer. I had put a UGF plate under the crushed coral substrate in my new 55 gallon reef because I didn't want the substrate to go anerobic, but now I hear that is a good thing. So, should I use it as is...

    Bristleworm...

Thank you! I had planned on getting one or two arrow crabs for my 55 gallon reef once that is ready for livestock anyways. Other than feather dusters what kind of critters can't I keep if I get arrow crabs?
