    Africans & Pitcus Cats

Actually the cat is already in residence. The cichlids will be the new additions. I am reconsidering my choice of African cichlids. I think maybe some apostis(sp?) or other South American cichlids maybe in order. Still pondering. *L*T*

    Africans & Pitcus Cats

I am undergoing a tank changeover from a peaceful community fish tank to an African Cichlid tank. I have a Pitcus Cat I'd like to keep. He's about 6" long, very healthy and strong. Can he co-exist with African cichlids? Should I opt for Tanganyikan cichlids as opposed to Malawian? Any advice you...

    11pm and 86 degrees...

I had the opposite happen to me. My AC was out earlier in the summer and I turned the heater down in my tank. Long story short I got the AC back online and noticed my fish were moving slow and not eating with gusto. Looked at my temp strip and saw it was down to 68 degrees. Oops! Turned it up...

    fish bad Luck Myth

Italian Superstition It is an old Italian superstition that fish as pets bring bad luck, even death to the family in which the fish are housed. I had a friend growing up whose father was very ill, bought a fish tank and set it up. His dad was from the old country and was very adamant(sp?)...

    question about algae eater

Can an algae eater hang upside down and be dead? Mine has been in the catfish cave for 2 days and has not moved, but he is upside down on top of the cave. Just wondering. *L*T*

    Rosy Barb a whirling dervish

My long finned rosy barb has developed a strange behavior in the last 24 hours. He is swimming in manic spins mostly upside down. He levels off after a while but when I look in on him he gets excited and swims all crazily. I have quarrentined him but I am at a loss as how to approach treatment...

    Changing Filter Medium

I have a Penguin Bio Wheel that has been up and running with the original filter for about 4 months. I rinse it out every other water change in the old tank water. I was wondering at what point do I change it out entirely? It is an important part of my bio-filter and I am reluctant to mess with...

    Question for the veterans......

Is disease in an aquarium inevitable? Or can it be avoided with dilligent tank maintanence, pre-screening through quarentining, and not overpopulating the tank? I don't want to jinx myself, but my tank is a doing amazingly well. I test my water regularly, do 10% water changes every 4-6 days, not...

    Eel hiding places.....

Thanks for the encouragment. I may have to get me one of those "moonlight" lights and stay up a little later than usual. I just hope he gets enough to eat or something to that effect. :) *L*T*

    Eel hiding places.....

Well, I went the LFS and found out I have a Zig-Zag Eel. And also found out that when he gets acclimated to the tank he will be a little more of a presence. I haven't seen him/her since day before yesterday but I'm not worried. But I still wonder where it could be. Oh well. I'll try to take some...

    Eel hiding places.....

I'm not 100% sure what kind of eel I have. The LFS guy told me when I bought it but I forgot. I will go and find out today. I also have 2 pitcus cats that are hyper active and noticed that when the eel was out, the cats swimming patterns, mostly around the bottom of the tank, crossed the eel's...

    Eel hiding places.....

I have recently purchased an eel and have found myself searching for the longest periods of time for it. For the last 2 days I had given it up for dead (or alien abduction). Well lo and behold, guess who decides to show up for lunch. It got me to wondering, "where in tarnation did that eel hide...

Worst part of the hobby, for you?

Fish dying is the biggest bummer for me. I find tank maintenance to be therapeutic. Testing the water, vaccuming the gravel, watering my plants with the waste water. Takes a total of 20 minutes tops. I love how my fish react when fresh water hits the tank. They perk up and I can almost see them...

    55 gal. Bermuda Triangle

I found the Gourami, I knew he was on the way out unfortunately. But taking your advice, there will be no more neons placed in this tank. I think the Pitcus Cats (which are some of my favorites, and therefore staying) were waylaying the poor tetras. I may keep my current population levels as is...

    55 gal. Bermuda Triangle

Well, the other 3 Neons have disappeared and the sick Flame Gourami has disappeared as well. No sign of Anyone, Anywhere, Anyhow!!!!!! This is too weird. I mean totally gone. No bones, no nothing. I hope it ends here or this can start geting expensive. *L*T*

    55 gal. Bermuda Triangle

I think you may be right. And now they are all gone. This morning I awoke to find NO more neons in the tank. And when I think about it, I haven't seen that eel eat a thing since I bought it. Oh well, lesson learned. *L*T*
