Can an algae eater hang upside down and be dead? Mine has been in the catfish cave for 2 days and has not moved, but he is upside down on top of the cave. Just wondering.

Yes.
Some will hide a lot.
I use to have one that managed to get *under* the UGF, cause he managed to dig a hole into a corner.

Mine always hides during the day. In fact, when I toss a vege wafer into it's cave, much of the time it lands on it's head. Pleco doesn't even move, just sits there wearing the wafer like a hat.

Chances are as others have pointed out, your pleco is only coming out at night and hiding all day long and only looks to be not moving. After lights out wait an hour or so and then sneak up on the tank with a flash light to check out what is happening.
