Yesterday morning when i tested my waters in my 29g i had 5ppm nitrates. I added a new filter to my tank, a rena xp2, but i left my crappy aquatech HOB filter on and will for a few months until i build bacteria on the new filter. When i tested my waters today when i got home from work i had 0ppm nitrates. Is this a problem?? I'm going to assume no because i have 0 Ammonia and 0 Nitrites.

Actualyl yes. It is a problem.

You should have at most 10ppm of nitrates but never 0. That means the tank might go into another cycle. IS that all you did was add the filter?

tank is not planted and yes all i did was add the filter, will this cycle be shorter? I just added a bushy nose pleco a few days ago and i really dont want to stress him.

are you certain of this? how do you back this up?

I have heavily planted tanks which will hit 0 nitrates..i have to add nitrates via ferts as 0 nitrate may lead to algae growth..but my tanks are fully cycled. according to your statement I too have cycling problems.

so I beg to differ with this assumption. 10 ppm is low for a planted tank as this would be a minimum level to maintain a planted tank.

lets wait to see what the situation is then try to assist.

the nitrate test is the trickiest of the tests..

if you have an established filter running with the new filter ..you should be fine.

but I would keep an eye on the ammonia and nitrites..as long as they stay at 0 you should be okay.

is there new activated carbon in the new filter?

Umm....i don't know, thats just what i heard.

NO need to jump down my throat about it.

;) not jumping down your throat..just trying to clarify.

that was a pretty broad stroked statement( we have all made similar statements.)

I just tested again, and nitrates are at 0ppm. If i do jump into another cycle do you think my bushy nose will be ok?? i dont know how sensitive they are to ammonia
