I got a pristella tetra fish about 4 days ago and today I was looking it and noticed that it has 1/2 of it's right gill missing and I can see red. How can I help this fish get better? I am not sure what the problem is so I can not treat it. If anyone has ever fixed a problem like this or understood it please tell me more. Thanks

I've had a fish or two with some part missing that was sort of important. Ropefish missing a fin and something on its head, and a cory missing its barbels. I honestly dont think there is much you can really do except let it try to grow back naturally. I added stress coat in the water because it says it helps replace slim coat and also says it helps heal and replace damanged tissue. Not really sure if this product helped but eventually the pieces grew back on my ropefish. I havent added any for my cory which i just noticed but i will add eventually if nothing grows back. Hope that helps.

Personally speaking i'd add some salt, salt is a good allo round cure for a wide verity of illnesses and to be honnest I dont think it would hurt to try some here, go for a ratio of 1 tablespoon of salt per 5 gals of water and you should be fine, even salt sensative creature seems to be able to tolerate this level.

Either.... but I don't think it'll help in the cae of your fish. Typically it's used to make swimming and bouyancy easier for fish that my otherwise have trouble, like say it was missing a nice piece out of it's back or side. This allows the fish to stay upright and mobile when it may not be able to before.

If your fish is swimming on it's own and eating I'd just leave treatment to stress coat.

I would not use salt for damaged fish. I think you would be better off adding a medicine to prevent a secondary infection and then keep an eye on the fish while letting it heal itself. DO NOT ADD SALT to a tank without sick fish. It's a myth and a dangerous one, in my opinion.

Hey thanks everyone for the input, I am going to go get a 16 oz bottle of Stress Coat for 9.25$, because it looks like it is not just only good for helping the fish's pain.
