1/2 Tinfoil barb acting very erratic

Tank could not possibly be cycled, and you're apparently not tasting for the very thing which at this point in time is likely causing the problem - ammonia.

What kind of test kit are you using by the way ?

That link I posted has an explanation of the kind of parameters to expect when cycling.

I'll be picking up the all the testing equipment from my buddy tomorrow.
I'll double check everything then get back to ya.

You might be reading something wrong but if you are right and your nitrAtes are at 0 then your tank is NOT completely cycled.

Ammonia = 0
NitrItes = 0
NitrAtes = 25 is what you are trying to get.

It is not likely that both your Nitrites and nitrates are both 0 unless it is all ammonia. In which case you are killing your fish very painfully.

Tiger barbs are fin nippers and mildly aggressive.

I did let the tank cycle for approximately a week prior to putting my tiger barbs in there. Then a about 1/2 a week later, i put in the tinfoil barbs.

I did the test and the readings are as followed:
Nitrate - 0
Nitrite - 0
pH - 7 Fresh
KH - 40
GH - 60

How do these numbers look? Also, the first few days i had the tank, i had a lot of foam at the top of the tank. What further helped the increase in the foam was me turning on the bubbles in the background. So when i had the bubbles turned off, there was minimal bubbles, but when i turned it on, it was about an inch of foam on the top, above the water.

Letting the tank sit for a week, doesn't "cycle" it. Waiting for your test results.

Welcome to AC

you are getting good information from veteran members here. please do not take offense to it(just in case you may mis understand)

your tank is not cycled in 1 week.. it would take about that long if you were using live bacteria(read as from another tank or bio-spira).

when you get an opportunity please try and read up on cycling a tank.. it will help you in the long run.

since you haver fish already you will be live cycling the tank..you will need to do water changes to keep the water at safe levels and you will need a good reliable test kit.

you buddy has a 55? correct?

good luck and hang in there.

if you feel it is safe you can try moving bacteria from his filter material and adding it to the filter in your tank. as mentioned you should have 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite but you should be seeing some nitrates.

you already know about the tinfoil barbs,,btw the 55 will prob be too small for them too,
;)

A 55 gallon will not do. Try three times that size. Do a search for 12 Volt's 18" lemon finned tinfoils in a 90g.

just a friendly word of warning: 100 gallons is not nearly big enough.

here are shots of my 18 inch lemon finned tinfoils in a 90 gallon (as mentioned above :)).

I have lost one (jumped right through the lid), since this shot was taken, but you get the idea.

I am house hunting with the prequisite that I have a location for a 6 foot 150/180 gallon aquarium - thats what these fish need as a minimum.

Lemon finned tinfoils are amazing fish, and yours are very nice, but they need MASSIVE tanks, and quickly - they grow an inch per month very easily

good luck!

great looking fish!

Good luck, 12 Volt. Hopefully some day you'll have a monster tank with a whole school of lemons :)
