I was just given a 1 gallon tank (Hawkeye Aquaview) as a gift. After reading through many posts about overpopulation I am questioning the ability to have more than one fish in the tank. I want to make sure that if I get fish, they are happy fish (not sardines). Can anyone help me on ideas about what I can do with such a small tank. Thanx

If i were you i would put 1 african dwarf frog in the tank, do frequent water changes etc,

i guess these frog are very light on the bioload

if you're interested there is an awesome article on them in the article section

You could go with a couple ADFS, some shrimp, or some snails. And although I might get yelled at, and they would definately be happy in a larger tank, a betta would work too. The small tanks like that are really alot of work though, they need frequent water changes, and you have to very careful that conditions, temp. etc. don't fluctuate much. IMO they are more work than they are worth

I'd much rather see a beta in a 1g tank with proper filtration than a 1/2 pint plastic cup with holes in the lid. I'm also not sure about ADF and a betta in the same tank, but since I haven't tried that set up I can't really comment on it. I think a betta and a snail or a shrimp would look decent in there or some ADF and a snail. I can't think having ADF and shrimp in such a small footprint of space would be good.

according to the article i referenced ADF's (african dwarf frogs) create the same amout of waste as a tetra- in which case they are lighter on the bioload than both beta and snail--snails are rather mess and poop a lot- i wouldn't put one in 1 gallon unless it was all by itself

You can have 2commot goldfish until they get to big or baby fish or may be even 5neon tets

i don't wish to sound rude but

NOOOOOOOOOO way pran-

comets get over 12" long and will be stunted in a week

and neons need to be able to swim and 5 in 1 gallon would soil the water in moments.

no no no. don't do it.

you could just keep 3 cherry shrimp in there so it's cycles and can serve as an emergency quarantine tank when you need it

You could keep it for giving a fish an Epsom salt bath.

I have a 1 gal too, I really do think that they are useless except for short term housing.

Perhaps you could exchange it?

kyle is right you cannot keep 5 neons in a 1 gallon. You can't put just one in either as neons need to school. And comets would be stunted very quickly.
Good luck
