OK so about a month ago I added 3 turquoise rainbow fish to my 120. Well one either died or got eating. I figured that one was small enough to get eatin. Well yesterday I added 2 more and yet again one is missing. I don't know how this is happening. They're all the same size so I would assume whatever ate them would eat more than one? Does anybody have any ideas why this would happen?

what size tank..what is in the tank with them

is it covered? they are good jumpers

If one out of each addition always dies, you'll lower your per fish cost by buying more than 2 at a time!;)

Well I'm trying to do 4 turquoise, 4 yellows, and either 4 boesmans or 4 reds.

I guess he might be hiding. He did hide a lot in quarentine but he was schooling with them yesterday.

Well I don't think he was hiding BC he didn't come out to eat. I guess I'm going to have to fatten my rainbows up before going to the main tank. Would a 20 gallon be able to hold 4-5 rainbow fish to get them fatter? I'd have a aqua clear 50 on it. Bare bottom with twice a week water changes? Maybe two feedings a day one of nls one of frozen brine shrimp.

I suspect its incompatibility. I would say, depending on size, that the cichlids are far more aggressive than the rainbows and you will always run into issues. I can't really envision enough hiding spots to make this arrangement work long term. Hard to say why they are only picking on one of the two 'new' species, but given time, I would expect the other rainbows to disappear as well.

a 20 is fine to raise your rainbows for a while. I would say a 20 long would be better, but a standard 20 for 3-4 weeks would be sufficient.

Its a 20 long, and full grown the rainbows should be fine. I'm going to have to grow them out or buy larger ones.
