I bought an aquaclear filter yesterday and one of the justifications for paying more than I would on amazon was that it has a thing on it for a free 6 foam inserts and 12 carbon inserts. (1 year supply). So, the required things seem to be the receipt for the filter and the upc code from the filter. Plus the receipt(s) and ups codes from a years worth of inserts you bought. (correct me if Im wrong). So does that mean I need to buy a year of inserts first? the offer stands until 2013 so I think they mean for you to have bought a year of supplies by then. So, would there be anything wrong with me buying a a year of carbon and a year of foam all at once and saving them until needed? I know there isnt anything wrong with the foam, but does the carbon go bad or anything if it is kept in the bag in the box? My understanding is it is "activated" when it is rinsed in water. I have a few coupons and there is a sale on the stuff so now would be the time to buy at least some of it.

If kept dry sealed in plastic, the carbon will last longer than you will. ;-)

Plus the AC sponges are nice for prefilters & I double them up in the filter too. Smaller pieces for tank wipe downs, much better than the cheap D&S sponges I bought 1 time. Just read the offer carefully to see when, what & how to get your "years supply" & do it now before you forget or lose something you need (always good to make copies just in case).

I have read it like 20 times to check. It says the offer stands until 2013. I suppose because it takes a year for people to need to buy all of stuff. But I like to always keep a few inserts for all my other filters so I dont have to run to the store to get a new one. Plus I have time to properly seed them. I might just stick to the buy when needed for these since the offer stands till 2013. I spent about $250 on my rc stuff and have $65 left from christmas. I would like to keep that around for other things. I like to display product boxes and I have a whole shelf of fish boxes. The ac30 box is the new centerpiece and has the receipt and stuff to fill out for the free inserts. I will just keep the receipts and barcodes from the inserts in there until I have enough. (6 foam and 12 carbon).

Looks like it is about $4 for both the foam and the carbon, but the foam can be used twice. So really $2 a month and an additional $2 every other month. Not too bad considering I was paying $1 a month for cheap carbon for the pf10. I am more than willing to do that to use the better filter and have better water quality for the fish.

You don't really need to replace the foam just rinse it, the only time I've bought AC foam is to add a second sponge in place of the carbon inserts.
