I dont think you are suppose to use air stones on planted tanks as it breaks surface tension of the water and let the avaliable Co2 escape faster...Co2 is what plants need.

Plus air stones are really just a thing for looks anyway....they dont do anything really other than maybe help add alittle o2 but you should get enough surface movement with a standard HOB filter too not have to ever worry about this.

Oh thanks for the hint and is there anything else i need to do or know and any other hints on how to do stuff.

Also one more thing the tank should start running tomorrow and the first thing i am going to do is test the water and put in the heater to raise the temperature to what it needs to be....

Here is some good reading for you...explains alot about what "cycling" a tank involves

http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84598

Cycling should be your main priority right now...then while it is cycling you can be getting everything together for when it is done....and do alot of reading on the forum...you will be surprised at all you can learn in a few weeks.

You can go ahead and put your plants in now if you want too as plants will do fine going through a cycle and in most cases help speed it up.

Yeah you have some cleaning to do...try using regular vinager to get alot of the scum off the glass, hood and filter...should clean up pretty nice with alittle work. You can soak the gravel in some water with just a very little bit of bleach to kill off any algae if you plan on reusing it...just be sure to rinse it off good then soak it again in new water and add extra dechlorinator to help get rid of any leftover bleach it may have on it before adding it back to the tank.

Yea i will use vinegar but um i am not going to use that substrate and i would like to find out what is best to use for a planted aquarium...

There are several choices you have...sand,gravel and several soil type substrates...just do alittle searching on here and you can find all the info about each one so you can take your pick.
