I might have the chance to get a FREE (or next to free) 100 gallon tank. I think I would like to try my hand at cichlids...maybe convicts? What do you guys think I should do? I would have to purchase lighting, filtration, airpump and a heater, but the stones and tank are free, so I can purchase whatever necessary to accomodate a nice group of cichlids. Thanks for help/advice.

Lake Malawi or Lake Tanganyikan community would really be great to watch.
Cons will only limit your choices as they get extremely aggressive even during spawning times. Note that cons have a tendency for being very prolific. The benefit lies with selling a lot of fry though and even making them feeders for your predators. But this may depend on the Law of Supply and Demand in your area.

Tanganyikan cichlids definitely. I would focus the tank around a pair the Altolamprologus of your choice.

Well, if FW is a must, Discus are my personal faves. You could have about 10 in there, with some dithers (like cardinals and corys) too.

^I agree that with your tank size a discus w/ school of tetras tank would be awesome, but keep in mind that discuses need pristine water...
